Anzani
« on: May 08, 2014, 01:55:37 PM »
I had a little trip on Sunday to Old Warden and made friends with many  desireable engines. Sadly my camera was having a bad day  But I did find a little something that might not be beyond my capabilities to make a model of:

This is the Anzani "Military type" Fan Engine, a similair engine was published in Strictly IC back in 2001:

But it is not quiet the same  :( the other Y type Anzani is also nice:

And I noted that Les Chenery did a design for one in ME back in 1996:

Which is sweet  ;D But Les's original design had balance problems, than needs to be sorted out

So now we come down to the problem of those  things the castings. I have found a very nice man who can do me some of these:

They are not the Les castings which are these:

the third party patterns have a bit more metal in them  ;) and are priced to make me go  ;D

Can someone explain why the ribs on the new castings are in a different place to those on the Y type, is there another model Anzani that I am not yet aware of  :noidea:.

Jo those ribs are there to make the crankcase more ridged.
Maybe the old crankcase design is not strong enough at the crankshaft bearing and will show cracks after time.
A other option is a redesign off the bearing off the crankshaft.
I am studying the KIWI mark 2 model engine ( I like to build)  at the moment and there is also a different crankcase design.
Not only the ribs on the crankcase but also the they use now roller bearings.
Maybe this is the case on this engine also.

The Anzani is one of my favorite engines.  I just discovered this engine which appears to be more of an F-Head design...

Wow, now that is nice.

I have been collecting photos of this engine thinking it might be a worthwile engine.

Jo I think this is the reason your set of castings has six webs rather than 3 or 4. Looks like you will be in for a bit more work :LittleDevil:

 :o

That explains it he also offered me a six cylinder radial Anzani for the same  :embarassed: very reasonable price. But after three cylinders do I really want to do another six  :noidea:

Looking again at those photos your 6 web one only has bosses for three cylinders but a bit of an odd layout as it would be a sideways Y >-  :headscratch: if the writing is to stay upright.

No you are right  ;) that is the 6 cylinder engine, very little of the bosses cross over onto the other half of the case, so it needs 6 cylinders.

Best not get rid of the Myford just yet, you have the capstan for that don't you? Would be ideal for 6 and 12 multiples

Now y'all have me all excited. I really like the looks of these. Jason, with all her day tripping to shows and new equipment purchases ( where did this behavior come from) do you think you could persuade her to just send this set of casting to me by Father Christmas. Just think of the entertainment value of my build thread on that one :lolb:

This is what happens when you don't have someone keeping you under control when you go out and about  :whoohoo:

You know what they say "Its better than  :embarassed:"

Jo,

Thanks for the pics.  Those little Anzanis are very nice, I'd always thought I would try one when I venture into multiple cylinders.  A friend and I measured up an Aeronca horizontally opposed twin (actually a Jap 99) once with a view to making a model to power a scale Luton Minor.  Our drawings and photos got lost when he sadly died.

Cheers,

Rod

The 200 HP 20 cyl  Anzani would be a amazing project for the more masochistic of us   :whoohoo:
I did try to attach a pic but for some reason it would not work.
Anzani  also made 6 and 10 cyl Engines some of which were water cooled.

What was the balance problem with the Cheenery model?
