V-belt pulley question
« on: April 24, 2014, 02:15:05 PM »
After seeing Chuck's post about the Gates Polyflex v-belts, I decided to go with those on the PMR Dynamo instead of a flat belt and a crowned pulley.
The spec for the 3mm belt shows it is a 60° angle so I did a little trig to calculate the depth of cut for the 60° tool to give a 3mm opening at the top.
The question is:
Is there a convention for how far below the pulley top surface the belt should be recessed?
Best,
Stan

Stan, There are industry standards for belts/pulleys, 3L, 4L, etc., dependent on the belt width. The dimensions follow those standards found on the pulley websites.

Stan,
See page 39 of this link for a drawing of the pulley cross section for Gates polyflex belts.
http://www.klee.dk/files/cms/services/kataloger/gatesvedl.pdf

I just noticed it only has the dimensions for the 5M, 7M and 11M sizes but that should give you the idea for the 3M size.

Stan,
Found it see page 99 of this .pdf for the pulley dimensions.
http://www.gates.com/~/media/Files/Gates/Industrial/Power%20Transmission/Manuals/PT_GatesLPPdesignManual_2005.pdf

The 3M profile has a 2/3M and a 3/3M version for a double row and triple row belt for miniature heavy equipment.

Dan
Thanks so much. That's exactly what I needed. I had looked on the Gates site but never found it.
Best,
Stan
