Not too sure on the wear on the cylinder with a cast iron piston, is the cylinder brass or bronze? Should be OK.
Your burner look like one of mine.  I found the wire wick in volume 1 of Model Engineer 1898.      Ian S C

That's a nice engine Ian!
We've very similar burners, too. Seems, wire wicks have stood the test of time......   ;)

I've gone the graphite route.......

Quite a clean system, vacuuming during machining. Thanks Achim!

I've now got a roughed out piston........

What's bothering me, is the need for a polished bore. Which I can do, no problem. Probably.

But, it will probably be tapered. Which I can't fix, until I make the piston to fit into the large end.

But, I can't enlarge the tight end by polishing. It will need honing, then polishing........

And probably finish up, oversize........  :facepalm2:

I'll quietly, get on with it, and see what happens.  :)

By 'ek! It's more than two months, since work stopped on this engine!  :o

From the last line, of the last post. I actually did, "get on with it", at the time.........

Turned a 12mm dia mandrel.......

Then turned/ polished the piston to a nice fit in the cylinder......

Temporary assembly. Losing one of the M2 nuts, in the process.

It still runs!  Now, needing no warm up! :whoohoo:

I now, need to think of an "eyebrow", over the flame/ port area.

And, that's the point where it all stopped........  :disappointed:

No problem Bill.

As that was your 2nd time in this write up. I was wondering if I should adopt my new name.......   ^-^

Frazer.

This project, just stopped! I've been busy. One way or another.

That twin is gorgeous. I think I need to ask his permission to show his vid, on here.......

I've finally got Gold Blend working well. Also with a graphite piston........  :)

I'm readying engines, and baking flapjacks, for the Steamtoys show, at the moment.  ;)

Hmmmm.... David it must have been the Nick in the subject heading that confused, though that is no excuse. Hopefully I am not getting that senile quite yet!! :) Either way, my apology for the faux pas :)

Hi Chaps.

Well..... I could do with an idea, or two.

The solder holding the shutter operating arm to the shaft, has let go.......

Probably due to the assembly being adjusted for sliding shutter height. The 3mm pivot shaft was also bent, and binding in the bearings.

What I would like is an adjustable/ lockable assembly. Not just soldered in place. Mebbe.........

I'm thinking of a flange, soldered to the shaft. With screws through, into the arm.  :headscratch:

Anyone got any better ideas? Thanks!

Have a look at Poppin
The drawings are on the john-tom site
The arm fits upto a shoulder and a nut clamps it into position
cheers

Thanks Frazer.

That's given me the idea to fix the central arm. And adjust the operating arm position, with a nut or screw.

The operating arm is fixed to the end of the shaft. I'll drill through at the pivot point, tomorrow. And, see what I'm left with......

Thanks Frazer.

New steel cross shaft. With shutter operating arm, sleevelocked and cross pinned, in place........

Cam arm held by M2 caphead, in a recessed 6mm dia washer. Working reliably, again!  :whoohoo:

I've rolled up some stainless steel100 mesh. To make a different wick.......

Works a treat, n all........
