A modest start: Elmer's Opposed #30
« on: March 19, 2014, 12:21:33 PM »
Yesterday evening I had time to descend in the cellar, where my workshop is.
Now you have all seen aluminium sawed, milled, drilled and tapped, so I give no pictures of that.
Here's what came up with:

The macro lens reveals what I didn't see with my naked eye (non enim est aliquid absconditum quod non manifestetur).
There is a lot more to do on these two pieces!  :o
Lunchtime is over, so back to my duties.

See you next time,

GertJan

Thanks Bill,

Last night I made the bearing and the rocker arms.

At assembly the arms were 3 mm too short  :( Some mistake in adding up.
Well, no disaster here. I'll make a correct pair soon.

Some progress:
The cylinder was made out of 30mm roundstock. It was the worst aluminium I ever encountered. Soft and gummy. I had to clean my drills and mills every few millimeters.
I used lamp oil and denaturated alcohol.  :stir:
The bearing and the shaft went well.
The rocker arms are now the correct length but need shaping.

 All the best,

GertJan

That's some nice progress Gert. Can you do us all a favor and resize your pictures in future posts to either 640x 480 or 800 X 600. These mega sized pictures are hard for many to download and for others to see without having to scroll around the screen. Thanks in advance.

Here's a picture of the engine as it is today.
I finished the new rocker arms, the screws, the pistons and the connecting rods.
The connecting rods are not very well made, so I will make new ones.

I remember a buildlog of this engine by Metalbutcher on another forum, but I can't find it. Does anyone have a link?

All the best,

A coin... Where are my foreign coins? At last I found some.
As Zee lives in the USA, it will be an one cent coin, left over from my daughter's half year in Riverside University California.
Do I have to provide an Euro coin or a Pound coin as well/ ;D ?

Thanks for the remarks.
The eccentric and the arms were made.
Something went wrong, as nothing moves now.
I hope to figure out what, because I made every part according to drawing and measures.
A good nights sleep will make things better!
But first a  :smokin2:

Frustrating I know Gert. As  you say...sleep on it and I am certain you will figure it out. We've all been there at one time or another!

This morning I dissembled the engine and seeing nothing what could cause its inertia, I replaced the drillrod with the shaft.
A temporary flywheel was fitted and when I turned it everything came along smoothly.  :cartwheel:

Now I need to loctite the bearing into the column, drill the steampassage through an make a connection to the aircompressor.
Some time will also be spent with emery paper and cloth.
I hope I can show the engine running on air soon.

Although... I never uploaded a video before. Does someone know a tutorial for that?

All the best,

GertJan

Glad you got it sorted out Gert. Sometimes sleep can be an enlightening thing :). Does wonders for one's patience as well!!  As to videos, most post them to a hosting service like photobucket and then embed a link to the video in their post here.

That's happy news GertJan!

All I know about video posting is using Photobucket. In that case...it's just the same as picture.
Upload it, copy the img, and paste.

Others use youtube and provide a link.

YOUTUBE was created to host VIDEO files

PHOTOBUCKET was created to host, you guessed it, PHOTOS.......

put videos on youtube and photos on photobucket
that way, videos will always work and photos will always display correctly

you may think im just a moaner but i dont give a  :censored:. Use the correct service for the file you want to share

other than all that
keep at it GertJan
everyone makes mistakes or cocks something up now and again
even the holier than thou ones that never admit to it

Not to take this off track...but...

From Wikipedia...

"Photobucket is an image hosting and video hosting website"
                                                        ^^^
I'm happy with it. One place to organize and control my goodies.

Yabbut...

PB has upgraded its user interface to nightmarish.  Looks like a bunch of crazed programmers, hyped on Mountain Dew and Twinkies, broke out of their enclosure and ran amok with their stubby, little fingers on their tablets or whatever the new, kewl I/O device is.

Youtube will never win an Emmy for its interface but it is usable.  It also has the advantage that the referenced video picture shows up with that little right arrow thing to inform you that it's a video and not a still.  PB doesn't do that and so, unless the author points it out, you can easily miss it.

Oh, and PB takes forever to download, even on my high speed connection.

I hate to agree with anyone who has an avatar that ugly, but I have to side with ziggar on this one - PB for stills, Youtube for video.

And to top it off, PhotoBucket videos won't play on iPads or Android tablets.  But YouTube videos will. That's another big advantage for those of us who like to view on our mobile devices (which I think is quite a few members!).

So, if there's a PB hosted video, I have to remember to go back and check it when I'm at my desktop. And unfortunately, I often don't remember to do that :(.

Your right Kim and the only way to see it on IPAD is to reboot it every time I want to see a video. Pain in the $'bgkl.
