How are you snowbirds doing?
« on: March 16, 2014, 09:15:37 PM »
I see it's freezing in Boston, Philly and Allentown and a toasty 25 in Chicago.

Be of good cheer.  Out here in LaLa land we've skipped spring and gone straight to summer.  The photo shows my outdoor (top)/ indoor thermometer.

The beaches are busy.  Check out the Strandcam...

Just thought you would all want to know.

Oh, just to keep it sort of on topic, the picture was taken using the Ikea light.

I think I need glasses, or maybe get rid of my beer goggles. I read that as "We got wolves"! Sometimes I think they are more predictable and less dangerous than wives. And I should know, because I have had several wives, but I've never been married... :LittleDevil:

Proper snowbirds head south to Florida for the winter :-)

Can't wait to get back to my Taig lathe after 4 months, presumably the frost will be gone by the time we get back up there.

Marv: I'm sorry to hear about the weather change there. 85F is too hot to enjoy and I see you must have the AC on already. My condolences.

Here is was 68F and sunny today. Been about this way for over a week. Real nice here.

Now if we can only irrigate the fields and have water to drink this summer!

Stan,

"I can't understand how anyone would want to live in that god-forsaken state of Pennsylvania."  Yup, says it all.  That's exactly how I felt back in '63 when I packed my bags and got out of there.

Hugh,

85 is quite pleasant when the humidity is 10%.  We've had a long hard winter of sub-70 temperatures and getting the air back to skin temperature feels great.

Dave,

I woke up to someone shaking the bed this morning.  Problem is, there wasn't anyone in the room.  The quake was in Encino, about 30 miles from us, and at 4.4 magnitude was certainly perceptible but not frightening.  We have little jolts like that every once in a while.  They're a good thing.  Releasing the energy in small jerks over a long period of time is, as you probably know, far preferable to saving it up for one big bang.

I checked with the His Holiness, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, and he says you're correct unless the location in question is New Jersey, in which case it's perfectly acceptable.   :mischief:

Well we missed the freezing rain and sleet. It's a balmy 38 right now with a good stiff breeze, but the sun is shining. Ahhh, to live in the land of fruit and nuts, if I ever get to the point that I don't believe in anything but myself, I might give it a try. Naw, I'd try the Caymans, not near as many kooks, freaks, weirdos, and pigeons 8)

Thanks for the update Marv! As I have been working outside all winter I hadn't noticed. There was that one day when it was -5F and I had to hook up some wires and couldn't wear gloves. Seemed a little cold that day and I was wondering what was going on.    :lolb:   :stir:

California certainly has the fruits and nuts market locked up.  However, from what I've seen of this country, the weirdos seem to be fairly uniformly distributed with, perhaps, certain distinctive peaks in the neighborhoods surrounding metalworking fora.

Knowing how much Marv loves smileys, l'll refrain.
However, the 2" of snow this morning is gone from everything but the lawn. Next few days mid-40s (F.) and upper 50s.
My plan for Friday, (57° F) is to install the motorized Sunsetter awning (and its wind sensor)
If you don't hear from me by Saturday, send help.

Marv must change.

Had he not...he'd still be where I am now.

Wine ages and improves.
Trees age and get gnarly.

Which is it going to be?

And...if Marv does not undergo change...then that means we have no influence on him. None. Wouldn't that be a bummer?

Just saw the latter posts...join us Marv. I'll treat you to a 'stinking hoppie'. I've got just the jelly jar for you.

Good point! But no.

I moved here to PA from MO and get a lot of "didn't you people just get electric and running water?".
I remind them that people moved west for progress. And that I'm here to help them 'go west'.

If successful...I'll have the place to myself.  ;D

I thought you might like this one. Lou ask me last week when I wanted to have the pool opened. I said; last week of April. So, she says I called and told them just to give us their first appointment. They showed up yesterday. Now I know this ain't crap to a lot of you, but, look what it was doing today.

Thanks Dave. That's my little taste of the islands in Tennessee. Yeah, it snow showered here most of the day yesterday. Zee, you know Bill L. and I have discussed that. Might be something we could work on. A MEM Invitational.

Yeah...and the pool can be used for the model steam ships!   :lolb:  I still like the idea of a more southern show Eric!

Second that idea. I can pack the car and set the GPS in about 10 minutes.

Last weekend was so nice here that I broke away from the engine build and installed a new Sunsetter motorized awning. Then I moved the patio furniture, carpet and pillows from the basement into their warm weather location. Then on Tuesday, I took the carpet and pillows back inside and covered the furniture. Finally I scrambled to install the Sunsetter weather cover and wind sensor. Jeez. Will this ever end?
Best,
Stan

This is an apt caricature of what Spring 2014 has been like for many of us I think.

The warm weather must have something to do with Easter being so late this year (just found out how that works) OK, the third week of July is the Ky-Tn Thresermans  Show (Google it) There is lots of live steam( a running Corliss along with others) and all the good old Redneck steaming kind of things. Let's start looking at a Southern MEM Model Show. I have the space and yes Zee, the beans. If only a few show up for the first year or two; Well, we'll eat more beans and drink more beer ( not while we're machining Jo). Ya gotta start somewhere :lolb:

Now we have to think up a catchy name for the show.  Just as an aside, our local Cotton Ginning Days show, coming up on its 26th anniversary began in year one as a single line of exhibitors no more than 75 yards long. Now it fills nearly the entire county park, has permanent exhibits, and with an estimated 30,000 visitors for the weekend, it is the largest single event in the county. Nothing wrong with modest beginnings at all!!

Those redneck turtle burgers look fabulous. I must learn how to make them when I am over with you.

Something to show the folks when I get back home.

Jim,
I'll put my cardiologist on speed dial, then we can "put another burger on the barby" :Jester:

I'm in for the
"Pickett's Charge Model Engine Show" in July.

You do realize that the Mason-Dixon line is about 25 miles south of York, PA. :old:

"Pickett's Charge" might be a hard sell in the South.  As I remember, it didn't go well for the Rebels.

A few words from a list of synonyms for 'cabin fever'...
Perhaps they will inspire? They certainly apply.  ;D

temporary insanity
climbing the walls
neurosis
disorder
restlessness
seasonal affective

"Restless Engine Show"

Or for a southern touch (yet still politically correct)...

"Armadillo Engine Show" or "SkunkWorks"

The last may be taken. Not uncommon.
