Three cylinder engine
« on: March 14, 2014, 05:40:43 AM »
This is an engine I designed to have bell cranks to operate the overhead piston valves but scrapped the idea because it was too complex. So I came up with a simple method using a ball bearing race pushing along a 45 degree ramp on the valve.

Have a look at the video of it running. http://youtu.be/6Saw3FfgDnA

The engine is driving a Brushless DC motor from a washing machine as a alternator.

That's a decently sized beast! A great vid to go with it, it reminds me of the opening of the film "A Steam Train Passes", as the slumbering beast comes to life. Thanks for that.

Cheers, Hugh.

I like the valve idea - nice and simple and seems to work very well. Doesn't that sound great at low revs. What pressure were you using to get it up to speed in the video?

I'd like to see it with a better ratio, producing more power at lower speed. Is this something you're going to do?

Thanks

That is a nice model there and seems to be running very smooth too!  Thanks for sharing the pics and video.

Thank you for the replies.

Heffalump,  The compressor goes up to 700 kpa and I kinked the air hose with my hand to control the air flow. Yes I could put a better ratio on the engine.

Bill.
