ARTILLERY CANON
« on: March 12, 2014, 03:25:51 PM »
I guess you have notice that I haven't started or built a project lately. Thats not to say that I have been idle. Work had pickup back up and I have been running up and down the road with my wife as some of you already know. Anyway I had a small project on the side building one little piece at a time and this was a project I really wanted to do, it was very enjoyable. Thats not to say that it's complete, as I still need to mount it add a chain and canon balls to the mounting base.
One thing I find hard to photograph is shiny base. I tried blue, red,  black and settled on white. These photos were taken with my IPAD. There are not the best, but I am sure Stan could give some pointers as to how to go about doing it. One thing I know is you need very low lighting. Anyway here are the photos and hope you enjoy them.

Really nice Don. When you add the details could you post another picture? Also, add something like a coin or ruler to illustrate size.

Very nicely done Don

Did you work from plans or is it freelance ?

Kind regards, Arnold
Building an engine takes Patience, Planning, Preparation and Machining.
Procrastination is nearly the same, but it precludes machining.
Thus, an engine will only be built once the procrastination stops and the machining begins!

Hi Arnold this was made from a kit I got from Grizzly. It's all bar stock and thanks for looking.
The turning I did by graving it with my quick change tool rest.

Eric my brother the cannon is actually three parts. No it wouldn't shot anything.  :lolb:

Allan when I finish I will put something for size reference for you.

That's gorgeous Don.  Reminded me of my youth when I used to play with something similar that my father had made at the dockyard. Must look for it but I suspect it has been lost.

Hi Don,
Your cannon is beautiful!  You did some really nice work there!
Sorry I'm so late to the thread, I must have missed it the first time around.

But wow!  your cannon's a real looker!  I agree, the white background does set it off nicely!
Thanks for sharing!

I joined this forum not so very long ago, when I bought my first lathe.  I check the forum most everyday, but this is my first post.  I don't want to hijack the thread, but thought you might be interested in this project - plus I just love to talk about it.  I can start another thread, as I have MUCH more information about my cannon.  Please let me know, if you are interested and I will start another thread.

I am a woodworker, but started a project in 2012.  It required the assistance of a machinist friend of mine.  As he was doing the "steel" part, I started to more seriously consider purchasing a metal lathe.  I have EVERYTHING you would need to work wood, but this is my first "metal" machine.  It has been fun.

My other interest is firearms.  I have used my "new" lathe to repair / build some guns, so that is entertaining to me.

This is Abigail, a 1/2 scale 1840 Six-Pounder.  It is bored to shoot golfballs, but mostly I shoot blanks.  I drew the plans and supplied my machinist buddy with full-size drawings as he needed them.  I built the carriage, wheels, etc.  Just about everything is built from scratch except the nuts, some bolts, chains, lock, and wheel bearings.

If I am out of line on this, please let me know.  I am a member of many different forums on the internet and just a little apprehensive posting my first time on a new forum.  Generally, I just observe for a time to see how the place works and then jump in with both feet - sometimes over my head.

Belated thanks Dave, Ausdier, John, and  Kim for looking and commenting.

Arbalest that's a beautiful looking Cannon I would go for it.

6270 very nice cannon I would be interested in how your wheels were made, but please post into a new thread your ventures as I am sure we would be interested in your projects. Thanks for showing.

The cannon base and chain are complete. I would of like the base darker but I settled on mahogany. I did stain it but it didn't get to much darker. Anyway below are the photos of it completed and  one photo I have placed a quarter in front for size reference for Alan. I hope you enjoy my project as much as I have enjoyed making it.

I don't know if this is the right place to put this but for anyone interested in cannons I have a few photos. Some know that I am in Jacksonville Florida but not on vacation. Anyway we had a day between test so the wife and I took a trip to St Augustine. This is a historic town in Florida and being interested in the history we saw a fort there which is where these photos came from.
This site is the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument.
This fortresses is a hollow square with diamond shaped bastions at each corner, with only one way in or out. In the bombproof storerooms that surround the central Plaza de Armas you will find museums highlighting various chapters of the fort's history. From this fortress you can gaze upon the waters of Matanzas Bay. From this command position , a garrison of Spanish troops safeguarded St. Augustine during the turbulent colonial era. Later English and then American troops also saw service here.
Juan Ponce de Leon named, "La Florida".
If you ever end up in Florida this is a place to see. Below are photos of the cannons and a few plaques about two of these cannons.

I took a photo next to it for size reference.

These cannons are bronze

Inside the fortress

These next cannons are mortar cannons.

Again I took a photo next to it for size reference.

Hope some of you enjoy seeing these.

I do enjoy the pics although I'd rather see the cannon in person.

I didn't realize you were so small.  ;D

I remember 6' 2"  :old:

In high school it was my dream to be 6'. Barely made it in 12th grade.
Then I kept going.
Now I'm on my way back to 12th grade.
Diapers not far off.  :(

I don't think they are far away for a lot of us buddy. But I remember in high school I grew 6" in my freshman year. I think my dad must of put fertilizer under my feet. All of a sudden I found myself taller then most of my classmates. :lolb:

6270Productions, very nice Cannon! I would say yes, start another thread and tell us more about your cannon. Lots more pictures would be good as well.

In recent years the cannon that have really fascinated me are the American Civil War ones. I particularly like the shape of the Dahlgrens as used on ships like the Monitor.

I did start another thread:  http://www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php?topic=3396.0

It covers the wheels, but I can certainly further discuss anything you would like - and I have MANY pictures.  I am SO FAR from the water.  We don't have many ships in Southwest Iowa, so I don't do that sort of thing.

Anything particular you would like to see?
