Side Shaft
« on: July 22, 2012, 03:06:59 PM »
Heres a pic of my scratchbuilt side shaft hit-miss engine. The flywheels are the only castings and all else is from barstock. the gears were sourced from Debolt's Vaughan engine. It has a bore of 1.25" and a stroke of 2". Flyballs govern the speed. Dave

Dave,

That IS a really COOL engine.  You gave a lot of attention to details.
Is it from commercial plans, or is it your own design?

Very cool!!

I love the angle cut on the exhaust, very unique!

Any chance of a video of it running?
I love the sound of the hit and miss engines.

Le Video:

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pon2XOtlMdc" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pon2XOtlMdc</a>

I built this engine a few years before I got into the web end of things and no in process photos were taken. I started by making the cylinder first. It was made from a piece of 3" dia CRS. The mounting ears are integral with the main body. Everything that wasn't needed was milled away and then the files, stones, sandpaper, and fingers got a good workout. I wanted to see how good of a job I could do blending all the surfaces together. Once the cylinder was finished I decided to make an engine around it. No plans were made and it is one of a kind. It runs on Coleman fuel as do all my engines. I used a sparkplug and a high tension ignition system but I figured I would someday make an igniter for the head and trip it from the end of the camshaft. It runs too good as it is and probably won't be modified. Thank you for the compliments and I am glad you liked it. Dave

I'm not sure if this was the right way to imbed a video but it will get you there. Dave

Dave,
Great looking engine. I also like the metal finish on it. It looks really industrial.

That's one fine looking engine, Dave.  You did very well on the finish work!
Sure runs great, too.  Love the sound.

Thanks guys, this engine was alot of fun to build. It was the first one of my own design and I wanted it to look like a larger mill type engine. The main housing was machined from one large piece of HRS I found. Most of it ended up on the floor. The crank is made up, pinned, and silver soldered. The base was made from Corian and Dark Cherry my father gave me.

This one is quite heavy but as long as I can still pick it up, it will get to go to the shows with me. Dave
