Boiler Refurb
« on: January 20, 2014, 06:55:13 PM »
I picked this up off ebay and plan to do a refurb to AMBSC standard
Some new fittings and a pressure gauge etc
It appears to be well constructed with both solder and rivets
100mm dia and 170 mm long with suitable number of cross pipes etc and heavy
It is missing its burner and I was wondering if anyone has a design out there suitable for it
Hydrostatic testing and certification will be on the list of things to do
Cheers
Joe

Nice find Joe

Like Dave said - a blowtorch style would work, or, if going for gas firing, and the flue tube is big enough - which it looks to be - a poker style burner will also do a good job...

Is the flue the same size and unobstructed right through ?

Kind regards, Arnold

Nice find Joe,

I think the first job would be a good soak in de-scaler... looks like it has been run using HARD TAPWATER.

How many cross tubes does it have? and what size bore does the main flue have.
I was thinking a burner of the type used on my 3 1/2" horizontal would be suitable with sizes adjusted to suit your flue.

I attach the drawings for the 3 1/2" burner: -

Best regards.

Sandy.

I was thinking the same thing Sandy, but I wanted you to answer that.

Good thought Dave

Here is a picture of my 4" dia boiler... it uses a slightly larger version of the 3 1/2" burner but exactly the same design.

The boiler is much the same size as yours Joe.
4" dia x 7 1/2" long... flue is 2" inside diameter.

Best regards.

Sandy.

Sandy - do you think your type of burner would provide sufficient heat for the Wide A Wake boiler? That's a 6" diameter 8" long shell with a 2" diameter single flue with six 1/2" cross tubes as designed - I thought about reducing the diameter of these and putting more in - say 3/8" times eight.

The original called for a torch style burner but I'd like to use the more silent ceramic type if possible. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Regards - Ramon

Hi Ramon,

Yes it would be suitable, possibly you would need to increase the jet size to a number 12 to get a bit more heat... personally, I would use a bigger centre flue on a 6" dia boiler... say 2 1/2" - 3" dia... as well as more cross tubes.

The 4" boiler in my last picture has 10 x 5/16" cross tubes arranged in a spiral... so 8 x 3/8" would be good.

Best regards.

Sandy.

Thanks Sandy - Interesting to hear about the diameter of the flue. It requires a bend inside the shell - not sure if there's anything that size but will check it out.

Thanks again - appreciated

Ramon

Thanks for the replies
The boiler has a number of cross tubes in the burner tube (40 dia) starting about 50 to 60mm inside arranged in a spiral pattern so it prevents using a stick type burner
Sandy thanks for the drawing but I dont think the ring type will work either ( assume I am reading the plans correctly and its highly likely I'm not)
I think it almost has to be a blow torch style
I will take a few more photos shortly - got to go to work - I hate it when work gets in the way of fun stuff
Cheers

Hi Joe,

No it's not a ring burner... it is a ceramic faced blowlamp type and produces a flame about 2" - 2 1/2" long... the ring looking part is a support ring which has secondary air holes in it... This is the round brass part on the end of the flue in 4" boiler picture... the burner tube passes through this and has the ceramic element on the inner end and the gas inlet on the outer end at 90 deg.

Ramon,

I assume the bend you refer to is to allow the flue to turn through 90 deg. into the funnel.

Have a look at the attached drawing... this is for the 3 1/2" boiler, but the 4" above uses the same method.

Perhaps you can adapt this method to your Wide Awake boiler instead of a bend.

Best regards.

Sandy.
