Barry's engines
« on: January 16, 2014, 08:36:35 PM »
When I first introduced myself I said I would show a few pictures Of what I had built.  The first one is a Stuart# 8 that I made over 30 years ago on my little 2 x 12 English lathe. The next is a 1/8 scale Rider Ericsson. The castings are from Myers. The Grasshopper is a set of castings from Canadian Model Engineering. It's about as large as I can do on my equipment. I had to file the bumps off the flywheel casting before it would fit on my lathe. The last picture is a simplified version of Tubal Cain's beam engine "Mary" built from material I had in my shop. The flywheel rim is two layers of 6 inch. steel pipe.

Nice engines but a 3.4 megabyte download for one picture?  Give me a break.  Even on my high-speed connection that took a while.  Anybody on dialup is SOL.

Download FastStone...

http://www.faststone.org/

and downsize your photos to 640 x 480 or 800 x 600 maximum before appending them.

Lovely engines Barry  and fantastic photography, as Marv said though, had to scroll all over the screen to see them and that's with a 22" monitor!!

Sorry, I did not realize image size would be a problem. Is there some way I can go back and replace the pictures with smaller ones?

Hi Barry, yes you can go back and edit your post...clear the attachments and then reattach the smaller files. As Marv said 64-x480 or at most 800x600 is plenty large  enough to see with good detail, but easy and quick enough to download. I am looking forward to see the smaller versions, especially that 1/8 scale Rider Ericsson.

Hi Barry, nice engines there. What's the little lathe you used?

Cheers, Hugh.

Hugh, my small lathe was a Flexispeed Meteor II. I ordered it from England over 40 years ago. I'm sure it cost me under $100.00 Canadian but at the time that was a lot of money for me to spend on a hobby. Apparently it has become a Cowells now. There is a post by Jo called "When is a Cowells a different Cowells". The first lathe she shows looks identical to mine. I found it useful for looking after my model railroad stuff but too small for real machining.

Barry, I bought the same lathe off eBay a few years ago, but for more than $100! It's a lovely little thing, doesn't get used too much at the moment, but will in the future.

Hugh.

Gary I see you have been poking around in the past. Thanks for the comment. I have not posted anything since then but I do still follow everything that happens here.
