Hello from Michigan
« on: January 07, 2014, 05:51:03 PM »
I have been lurking here for the last month or so and realized that I had never done an introductory post.

I am from Michigan where we are presently a balmy -10° F. I have been building model engines for the last 6 or 7 years but have gotten in to it more since I have retired. I owned and operated a metal fabricating shop where I designed and built industrial equipment, primarily material handling equipment. The biggest problem for me has been thinking in terms of precision instead of about right. In my working life +/- 1/8" was plenty close enough in most cases.

I am looking forward to learning more from the folks here.

Welcome Gordon!

Where in the mitten are you? Anywhere near detroit? We have a small group that meets at Macomb County Collage every wednesday if you are close enough.

I am from Grand Rapids MI. I have a 14" South Bend lathe and an Ex-Cell-O mill as well as the usual assortment of tooling and hand tools. Big machines for a home work shop but when I liquidated my business I had it and I figured that it was going to be worth just as much 10 years from now so and I needed something so I just kept what I had. I have a 20' x 34' building out behind the house so that is my daily destination.

My dad built a Breish Olds engine in 1985 and I bought the castings about the same time but with working full time I never got around to it until I semi-retired. I now have 20+ completed engines and now spend most of my time hiding from folks who want me to work I tried that from 14 to 70+ always working 50-60 hours per week so I figure that now is my chance to relax.

Interesting side note: My dad and my uncle both made the Olds engine and were members of a local group and displayed their engines at the annual show. After I completed the Olds I took it to the show along with the other two and displayed the same engines made by two brothers and a son.

That is great Gordon. Would love to see some pictures of your work if possible.

Do you go to the NAMES show in Wyandotte? Maybe I have seen your work.
