Hemingway geared rotary table build
« on: December 22, 2013, 09:00:35 PM »
Santa dropped off early a kit to build one of these; http://www.hemingwaykits.com/acatalog/info_HK%201190.html

I primarily want it for rounding components but went for the geared version for extra versatility and apparently the table stops are easier to machine than the non-geared version.

Made a start on machining the base and whilst cleaning up the sides a big chunk broke off  :'(  It's very black and dusty to machine so presumably is cast so I think this flaw is called a cold shut?

Looks like a casting flaw or inclusion to me.

Sounds like a phone call is in order.

First class response from Kirk at Hemingway - they are sending out a new base casting and replacement worm gear that got damaged in transit which should arrive tomorrow.  :whoohoo:

I turned up at Kirks place a few years ago, expecting a shop, only to find it was their home. Both he and Sandra were absolutely wonderful, and I left with a much heavier suitcase. Good memories of good people.

I can attest to that, I have had nothing but good results with there casting sets. The quality is great and they have been great at replacements of bad a missing parts.

Well the ups man failed to turn up so have to wait to make a fresh start on the base.  Had a spare hour yesterday so machined up the pad bolt that locates the worm spindle bearing.

UPS failed with me on a next day from Hemmingway  At least there were other bits you could make some swarf on in the meantime  :)

Simon, I know you decided against the non geared table but I thought you might be interested to see a couple of pictures of mine in pieces. As usual I made it out of come in handies, including the base which is actually two parts rivetted/silversoldered together  :naughty:

You will be pleased to know the "Tee" slots are much easier to machine on this table  ;)

Thanks Jo - something I hadn't completely appreciated was the lower overall height of the non-geared version.  The tee slots are going to cause a bit of head scratching - my commercial table has three radial slots but I somehow feel four radial slots might be more useful but then the plans show two parallel slots :-\

Dave - If you do a google search for Thomas rotary table one of your threads from the other place comes up right at the top even though you started the build over three years ago!  :o

OK

Here's some photo's of the build thus far...

In this photo, the stub shaft is made, inserted and used as a mandrel to finish the OD turning and Grooving.

Should of had the blank cut longer.....but C.O.R.

Here's the nut turned and threaded .745-40.

The base blank......

After a trip to the saw

I am now squaring this block up in preperation for a trip to my lathe....and the table.....

Like I said....it's sitting.....I'll get to it.

Well UPS let me down so still no replacement base to work on.  Instead I machined up the central pivot pin and the lock nut, here they are with the pad bolt.

UPS finally delivered the package - looks like they've been playing football with it in the meantime but the contents seem to have survived.

Whilst waiting for the replacement base I've made a start on the table - the supplied stock is quite generously sized so there is an awful lot of cast iron dust to create.

The major operations on the table are now done - just needs the T slots and the radial holes drilling.  I Loctited the central pin in whilst the table was in the lathe and then did a final facing skim to make sure it was all on the same plane - hopefully I wont regret bonding the pin in for subsequent machining ops!

Been working on the base - haven't completely followed the build instructions so that I could mount it on the faceplate with four bolts.  The table fits though so, so far so good.

Hogged out the back of the base to make the pocket for the gear - this allowed a trial assembly so I couldn't resist.  With a drop of oil it spins smooth as silk, next job is the worm spindle  :)

Spent the day making bits for the worm assembly - started with the main tube which has the central hole drilled slightly eccentric so that you can adjust the worm mesh.  Then drilled and reamed the brass bushes 1/4" to suit the supplied drill rod axle - all going too well!  I then checked the worm which is supposed to be supplied with an accurate bore to suit the 1/4" axle - nope bore was very rough and seemed more like 6.5mm - time for a rethink  >:(

Had some 7mm drill rod handy so decided to re-bore the bushes to suit and gripping the worm very gently in the chuck bored it out to 7mm.  Turned out ok I think so got on and made the main nut, tomorrows job is the micrometer collar and the hand-wheel.

Today I screw cut the end of the worm axle - no fancy clutches for me so lots of lathe on / off / reverse / on / off repeat.  Also machined up the micrometer collar - used a small 45deg dovetail cutter to machine the graduations.

So what's the brass button in that left hand corner doing?  Does it hold the shaft in place?

I think it's called a pad bolt - quite a neat technique that I've seen on other designs as well.  You prep the pad bolt with a shoulder and drill it's hole first - then you fit the pad bolt and machine the second hole at 90degrees to it so that it just intersects and machines a bit of the pad bolt away.  You then remove the pad bolt and turn down the shoulder before refitting it in the hole.  It works as a very effective grip that seems quite resistant to jamming.

Well it locks the eccentric bush in the base - the worm shaft can still turn though Kim.

I didn't like the design of the table clamp presented in the plans so decide to freestyle and come up with my own version.  First two pictures show the concave faces being machined on the faceplate and then third picture is the side faces being made radial by milling on the rotary table.  The idea was that one way up the clamp locks the table rotation and the other way up the table is free to rotate and the clamp provides the abutment for the table travel stops to bear against - last two pictures show the two modes of operation.

Next job is to graduate the table - 360 marks to make - groan!

You do some very nice work Simon. You should have no problem doing the 360 marks and actually it goes quiet fast. You do have the Dividing attachment and the stacking tool don't you? Looking forward to seeing  it done.

Today I graduated.... 359 times!  During the whole process there was a little voice in the back of my mind 'We are not at home to Mr Cock-up, we are not at home to Mr Cock-up, we are not at home to...'  Luckily Mr Cock-up didn't come knocking so the process went without a hitch.  Whilst I had the graduating setup on the mill I also drilled and tapped the 24 holes for the travel stops.

If you are laser marking the numbers at work and they don't have the Thermark spray [ £100 an aerosol - no not a typo, it's a type of ceramic slurry in a solvent made from crushed Chinese Ming vases, 6th dynasty ]
Get some dry moly lube £12 from RS in an aerosol, spray that on, let it dry then nuke it. Wash the surplus off with a bit of solvent and you get a nice crisp black mark.

Next up a fiddly job making the table travel stops, I started with a bar mounted to the face plate on the lathe to machine the outer radius and profile.  Then transferred the plate to the rotary table to mill the bolt slots.

:headscratch: why didn't you mount it in the lathe to turn that T slot and then add the tapered bit? I am sure that is how I did mine all those years ago.

I have just realised the side of my table doesn't have true Tee slots, the top of the slot is tapered, a much easier turning exercise  ;)

Jo - the geared version has a completely different style of travel stop to the non-geared table.  There is a simple groove right the way around the table that the stops slide in, then a series of holes that the stops bolt into.

:headscratch: I can put my stops at any position/angle, does that mean that yours are restricted to the prescribed angles   :( admittedly with a worm wheel you can give it a bit more "welly" when rotating it.

I'm calling the rotary table done - spent a bit of time lapping the gear mesh to minimise the backlash and it's now less than a 1/4 of a degree.

Nice job Simon,

I enjoyed your build, thanks for posting; I'm sure you will enjoy using it.

Wish I had more time to build tooling, maybe someday down the road.

Thanks guys.

I'm back on the V8 now, spent the morning assembling the bits I've made so far.  Had forgotten the assembly order so there was a lot of one step forward / two steps back  ::)

Simon.

Very nice rotary Simon!  Very smooth movement.  You did a great job on it.  As Don said, something to be very proud of!
