Hi from the Pacific Northwest
« on: December 04, 2013, 03:26:30 PM »
I started building an engine in high school and have been interested ever since.  The high school engine, a 10 cc two stroke racing engine, won a couple of Ohio state industrial arts prizes, but it's the last complete engine I've built.  I've been involved with model and full sized boat racing along with my partner, Mike Bontoft.  We built a dynamometer, developed engines, and set several model boat speed records.  We also set a world electric boat speed record and I rode with Mike in his classic offshore boat,  Dry Martini, in the 2010 Cowes Torquay Cowes offshore race.

The electric speed record:  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yNu2_LlO9s" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yNu2_LlO9s</a>
Dry Martini (I'm on the right):  <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwViZLfRwBA" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwViZLfRwBA</a>

Now that I'm semi retired I'm starting to think about building a complete engine again.  It will be a 26 cc gasoline model boat racing engine.  I have the shop, am setting up a foundry, and have played with some design ideas.  I just need to finish up some other projects and get started.

 :hi: Lohring,

 Cowes is a long way from the Pacific North West, it is more like my neck of the woods  ;)

Would like to see more of your workshop and foundary setup that you have. And your plans for that model boat engine  :whoohoo:

Welcome from another PNW resident. Where are you in the NW?

I started out with nothing, I still have most of it left.

My shop is in my house on the Oregon coast at the mouth of the Siletz River a little south of Lincoln City.  However, I work part time at Lane Community College in Eugene.  I travel to model boat races in Washington around the Seattle area.  The North American Model Boat National Championships will be north of Seattle next year.

Welcome to the group Lohring

It would be nice to see a model boat display next year at the GEARS show in Portland.
