Vice mounted Dividing head
« on: November 30, 2013, 11:50:46 AM »
I mentioned this in other places.....here's the model picture

It will use my SB spindle tooling (1 1/2-8 thread and 3C collets).

the rectangular bars on either side represent the 4" vise jaws on my mill.   The thought being I can mount this into the vise quickly and index ect without having to remove the vise to put my regular dividing head on.

It is based loosely on the GHT head that Don just built, and the same principles of Steve and Arnolds units

Straight indexing

Simple division.   (60/1 gearing)

As time allows.....Work is in major crunch time at the moment....so it will be slow going, and I have a couple of other projects going on... :ShakeHead:

Dave, this is exactly what I need for my Aciera F3. The chair is pulled up waiting for the next installment.Thinking a ER-spindle will be my choice since i have the collets.  ;)
Best reg.

It could certainly be scaled up slightly and set up to take W20 or W25 collets....so sure!

The F3 has W20's doesn't it?

And remember....the design intent is a synergy of the mill and lathe.   The center height is matched to the center height from my SB9 cross slide to spindle center height...uses the lathe chucks and collets, and fits well within my 4" mill vise.   The intent is I can take a 5" chuck with part off the lathe and put it on the index head with out dismounting...or put a collet in for smaller work.  The capacity with the over arm is a full 2" diameter.  That covers most items....and   I don't need to take the vise off the mill to mount it up.   I also intend to be able to use this to index my lathe spindle.   The tumbler gear on the South bend comes right out see below
Put an expanding arbor that fits in the lathe spindle and the indexing spindle and remove the tumbler

Tumbler in

In about 2 seconds....tumbler out

See that hole?...I'll put an expanding arbor in there, and use that to keep the indexer from rotating.   I think It will mount in about 1 minute.

Looks like a fun project Dave!  (even if you don't make new gears for your lathe to do it! :) ).

In the drawings in your first post, the top edge of the vice jaws look really close to the teeth in your big gear.  I'm assuming you've verified that the jaws won't prevent your gear from turning, right?  If they jaws were any higher, you'd have to make your base wider (or your gear smaller).

Very cool Dave

If your chucks aren't using the register?? I'd think about cutting the thread on the spindle first, then using a chuck with a bit of stock that has a true running centre drilled hole it, to turn the final cut on the OD of the spindle between centres. That way your chucks will pick up the same as they do on your lathe.

Well....12 hours at the "Mine" today....but I was able to dig out my 3" square stick of Durabar continuous cast , cast iron bar stock.     I think tonight I'll lop off an end to the right height.   It's about .09 big so it will clean up nice to 3" square and I'll cut it for the 3.44 length.

Then we'll square it up....I might start that tomorrow though......got to get up early again in the morning...looking at a 60+ hour work week this week.

I'll square it up all over, and then bring the two sides parallel, and the base square on the mill, rough bore it say .03 under, and then bring the sides parallel and the base square using the scraper...then finish bore while set up on those qualified surfaces.....on  Samantha Bell's boring table.
