starting scotch boxer steam engine project
« on: November 30, 2013, 12:49:56 AM »
http://www.homemetalshopclub.org/projects/scotchx2/scotchx2.html

Hi, I am starting to fabricate a variation of the double scotch yoke steam engine. I plan to use one scotch yoke to drive the pistons. The pistons will trigger bash valves in each cylinder. It will have uniflow exhaust ports on each cylinder. I am increasing the size a small amount hoping  for a power output between 0.5 and 1.0 HP.  It will be used to drive a permanent magnet alternator to generate electricity. Project goal is 15 amps at 12 volts. I have already fabricated and tested a mono tube boiler.

I am trying to keep the build as simple as possible. 1 by 3 inch brass pipes will be used for the cylinders. I will post photo's when available.
Searching for simple bash valve design, any help is greatly appreciated.

We need to know what part of the world you are from, if we are going to find someone to help you.

As for your tee bolt: as a starting point, do you have it's size?

Surely, whatever part of the world Burnit is from his (or her) first point of call should be the supplier he (or she) ordered the vice from since it apparently arrived with the bolt stripped.

Hi, my location is up state NY USA. The bolt size is M8 1.25. I sent the ebay seller a request but it may be faster if I can just buy a few extras on my own. I feel like a big kid on christmas that receives a toy but does not have any batteries to operate it. :'(

I did manage to find a temporary substitute. I started to cut and square the pieces needed to use 1 inch brass pipes for the cylinders. I also found some teflon o'ring that I can use as piston rings.

Hi, photos of scotch yoke that will operate the valves.I have to finish the drive shaft cam.

I decided to use a simple valve configuration.

Hi, I had to order some R8 collets and short drill bits. I am still waiting for them to arrive. In the mean time I wondering about paint. I plan to use the engine with a boiler, is there special paint that is used for steam engines to prevent rust?

Hi, I completed the the cam and crank. I have to fabricate one more scotch yoke then I can start on the pistons. Not much to look at but I am starting to think it will work.

High temperature paint for use on car engine blocks is certainly available, although the colour range is somewhat limited. But spray cans are always that way.

Hi, thanks, video shows manual operation using a 10 pound weight as a flywheel. I have to remove a few knocks and run the steam lines to each cylinder. I am using 3/8 brass rod for the spool valves. I am not sure how long the valve should be open? There seem to be a short dwell period at the end of each stroke.  Looking for a source for a large flywheel or possibly how to fabricate one.  Not much to look at and I am making a lot mistakes but the design seems to be very forgiving and the mistakes are easy to correct.

Very nice, +1 from me!

I've built a couple of double-scotches with eccentric/yoke set up but I'm looking into building one with this 'whack valve' idea too, much smaller than this giant though!

Hi, thanks. I made a lot of fabrications mistakes on version 1. Working on version 2. I hope to post some photos in a few days. I did find some off the shelf parts for the steam line between the two piston cylinders. The idea comes from another project posted on this forum.  I look forward to seeing your project.

Hi, the copper tube may need to be insulated. I am not sure what to use?? Suggestions are welcome.  I checked your videos on youtube, the scotty and the double scotch are the source of inspiration when I started this project.

Nice way to make a big flywheel.

Hi, first run of project on compressed air. There is a lot of blow by at the piston rings that will have to be solved but it is a start. :pinkelephant:
