Finely grained dremel drums
« on: July 25, 2012, 10:43:28 AM »
I recently read a question somewhere in the e-world about eventual sellers of finely grained dremel drums. Cannot recall (or find) where,
neither say a word about sellers, but they can be made in minutes.

Wrap a full turn (or more) of double sided adhesive tape on a small dia. rod of suitable length. (and suitable dia., too! Don't ask why I know that).

Cut a strip of the desired grit sandpaper as large as the tape is.

Wrap the strip of sandpaper on it, cut it so You will have about 5mm overlap. Take care to wrap it accordingly with the supposed rotating direction.

Put a drop of glue on the overlap backside, wrap the whole into a strip of plain paper and keep it closed with some adhesive tape.

Let it cure for a while.

Make a few, while You're at it: they're not of the quick-replace type.

Marcello;
Nice work! What have you been using for glue to adhere the sandpaper? Doesn't the double sided tape get heated up and slip?
Cheers

Garry,

it was "Attak" here. That's cyanoacrylate, liquid instant glue. I suppose almost whatever glue would do.
No double sided tape slips, but the tape I used was foamy and the drum got destroyed rather quickly when the tool was used on sharp edges. Managed to "finish" 14 rounded ends of the valve arms set with a drum and a half Yesterday, anyway. Not bad, I'd say.
Also, the glued portion of the sandpaper doesn't hold very long. Maybe a different glue, but providing the sandpaper was not wrapped against the rotation, that's not a bother.

Marcello;
Thanks for the reply. As long as it gets the job done!

Cheers Garry
