Hello

I am looking to machine up a fly wheel for a small project which I am quite happy to lathe it out of stock to the desired dimensions but I am not putting spokes in it just drilling holes but I don't now how many and what diameter I can holes I can get in.

Does that make sense....?

It does make sense. If you post a dimensioned sketch of the side of the wheel I can draw it up and post some possibilities so you can get an idea of what it will look like.

Hope the attachment helps, A = 2 1/2". B = 1/2". C = 1/4". D = 11/16"

at 3/8 the holes are starting to look a little bit too small

I was looking for something with a few more holes than that.......

Only joking 5 holes 625 looks about right.

I use Alibre but there are alot of programs out there that do the same thing.

How about a set of inverse spokes. Instead of milling out the area between the spokes mill out the spokes. For that matter, you could use multiple sets of holes inline at different radi where the spokes would be.

I'm not quite sure of what you mean but it sounds like a good idea. Could you machine one up for me and post a photo that I could use as an example. I think it would be cool.

I too would

to be in the position to own or have access to a home machine shop with lathe & milling facilities etc......however without these

I must resort to purchased components

Here are my 50 mm diameter x 4 mm shaft flywheels from Winfired Niggle

Take a look at the flywheel on the middle and right of this picture to see what I mean. (Sorry about the quality of the pic but I am on the road right now and that's the only pic I have with me.)

We'll that's done it, first I was confused over holes in a flywheel now it's which design.

I do like the look of the one on the right in your picture AOG. I will probably try that one out now.

Well flywheel turned out just need to work out which way to go . . . . .spokes or holes?
