Midlands Model Engineering Exibition 2013
« on: October 03, 2013, 07:50:48 AM »
I was wondering who else might be planning to go to the midlands show.

I have three lovely gentlemen taking me to the show on the Friday who claim are going to try to keep my urges to buy things under control  :(

I hope you have checked to see if their car has a tow hitch and large trailer for all your purchases, you could also travel on the trailer if the Loco talk gets too much for you :ShakeHead:

I would much prefer to be going with someone who I could have the pleasure of discussing making model engines or ploughing engines with but I have had no offers

What is it with this trend in beards and especially stubble: great for rubbing down the paint work on your model, but otherwise :hellno:

Jo, I have had my beard since 1970 and have had no problem with women not liking it. My kids have never seen me without the beard. I guess it runs in the family because my great grandfathers had beards there whole life.

Don I'm with you,

My son is 21 and daughter 17; neither have ever seen me without a beard.
I grew it in 1982 and it's been there ever since.

Oh Stop It you guys,

I only say that because I'm jealous.

In the RAN in my day, beards or clean shaven only. The rub was you were not allowed off the ship until it had grown for 2 weeks when it was duly inspected by the Jimmy and the decision was made whether or not you may keep it or revert back to the daily shave. Now the ideal time to request to stop shaving is when you know you will be at sea for at least 2 weeks. Usually this was when going to the far east.

So off we sailed in 1965 for our turn at border bashing to try and help the newly formed country of Malaysia resolve its' differences with Indonesia. In went my request to stop shaving along with about half the crew. The 2 weeks passed by as we ambled up the east coast, the Timor sea and so on to Singapore. There I stood in all my glory, completely outclassed by the hirsute offerings of my bronze ozzie mates. Jimmy the one looked me up and down, struggled to keep the smile off his face and said "Holme........are you sure you stopped shaving?"

And surprise, surprise, I've been clean shaven ever since.

Best Regards
Bob

Alas
my beard ( full set ) is grey my hair is grey and my eyes are dim is there any hope

mine is a youngster only dates back to 1972

trouble was my grand mother was a staunch primitive methodist on seeing my beard for the first time she made the comment "what have you done that to your face that God gave you "  my reply was " he gave me the beard as well "  not to be out done came back the reply " he leant you how to make electric razors as well " with that I gave up

still have the full set today with no intention of shaving ( stupid habit )

:old: this is a fair likeness but I have to use two crutches not one stick

Stuart

BTW have a good time at the exhibition and make sure you all get a mountain of castings from the extortionists opps ( exhibitors )
My aim is for a accurate part with a good finish

Reeves are not going to be there... and  :mischief: my feminine charms work wonders to secure things at a price, that even I am willing to pay  ;), from the traders.

I make no promises as to how much money I may or may not spend: one of the advantages of being single is that you make your own limits  ;D just don't tell the traders. Actually Steve and Chris at HWM know that I have a no limit budget  and forever are trying to tempt me with various desirables including Pete, who last time they let me take home, well at least as far as my car  :naughty:.

If anyone is going today please say hello, I should be easy to spot:

1, Lady who is (actually) interested in the models, tool and castings.
2, I am wearing beige jeans, my mauve GMES sweatshirt with a dark blue (waterproof  ;)) coat.
3, Hopefully weighed down with casting and tools....  ;D

Nice to meet up with you Simon , tell your Dad good luck with his Polly.

I also had the good fortune to bumping in to Rod and his good lady twice  ;D as well as Alan.

Not a bad show one may have acquired the odd casting but nothing really expensive   :embarassed:

Hmm what's the big round casting that isn't obviously a flywheel? The base for something?

It's the cable winding drum for the Fowler ploughing engine.  Even in 2" scale it's a big beast.

Maybe a bit late to report this but I went on the Friday, and I'm now back in NZ. The last ME show I attended was when I was eight so I really have nothing to compare it with. I thought the show was great. It did get a bit crowded mid morning but was certainly thinning out by early afternoon. The catering was fine, evidenced by the speed the  bacon butties were flying out out the door.

More to the point the exhibits provided inspiration to do better things myself and I was able to pick up a few toys from RGD, Polly Model and others to help with my current project.

No complaints at all on my part
