Atkinson engine by Brian
« on: October 03, 2013, 02:15:57 AM »
Last year, I bought a set of plans from Jan Ridder, to build the single cylinder Atkinson engine. The one which has no real "crankshaft". The build was long and arduous, with many problems encountered along the way. I must clarify ---the problems were not with Jans plans. His plans were excellent.  You know how, occasionally some builds seem to be "cursed" right from day one---To make a long story short, I had to rebore the cylinder, make a new piston, rotate the cylinder 180 degrees to get the sparkplug on top so the engine wasn't constantly flooding itself--

I couldn't get it to work with Jan's vapour carburetor that everybody seems to have such good luck with. Finally I said "Enough" and made up an adapter to mount a Traxxas model airplane carburetor on it. In this picture, the carb and adapter are in place, held with a rubber band while some Loctite dries. I also turned the lovely vapour carburetor into a conventional carburetor.

After a LOT of messing about, reworking and changing things, I did get it to run.

But--There was a problem. The way Jan had designed it all of those rather fishy linkages that replace the crankshaft were offset to one side---and when the engine revved up at all, everything wanted to "kick out sideways" and bind up. I hunted around on the internet, and found an Atkinson that Ron Gingery had built, where all of these linkages were centered on one and other and on the cylinder bore. So---I blatantly copied what he had done and made up the new parts in the pictures, and you can see that everything is centered with no offsets.

And eventually, the story had a happy ending. The engine ran much more smoothly with all of the linkages centered (at least I thought it did), so like all of the small engines I build, it had to start earning its keep. I put it to work driving a pump that I had built at some time in the past. And, as the happy ending to all good stories go---They lived happily ever after!!!

Thanks Brian, I enjoyed that and glad you finally managed to iron things out. It looks good driving that pump.
