Multiple Gearing Mechanism
« on: September 15, 2013, 10:04:07 PM »
This is a working model of a sketch in the book "507 Mechanical Movements" which deals with a lot of mechanical innovations that were conceived of during the industrial revolution. It is titled "Multiple Gearing" and looked so interesting that I had to try and recreate it. It is driven by a small steam engine that started life as one of Chuck Fellows' "Hit and Miss" compressed air engines, but has morphed into a simple single acting stationary engine.

Is this a variable ratio drive Brian?

Pretty neat Brian - tho it took me a while to work out how that spider operated in the slotted final drive wheel.  :ThumbsUp:

No, its not variable ratio. There is a fixed geometric relationship between the diameter of the driven wheel and the pitch circle of the rollers on the spider. Tel--Good to hear from you.--I am constantly on the lookout for ANYTHING that has a "neat" mechanical movement about it, that can be driven with one of my engines. Its hard to imagine, but there simply aren't that many things that are "quick and easy" to build, but pleasing to see run.---Brian

As mentioned in the video, here is a download link to drawings of the multiple gearing mechanism.

Interesting, Brian, I wonder if it ever had any practical application? Good video, and thanks.

Cheers, Hugh.

That's pretty neat.

I was given that book as a youngster.

Here is a web page where some of them are animated;
