New to me Albrecht Chuck
« on: September 14, 2013, 09:56:23 PM »
New...or at least very little used 1/32-1/2" Albrecht chuck!...And I mean it's in sweet shape!   .it has a straight shank on it...but I just ordered the J2 wedges and a MT2-JT2 arbor....so now I have a full range of chucks for Samantha Bell.  Price was a very reasonable ...for an Albrecht..at $80.

I got my new arbor...but I'm waiting on the removal wedges.

Has anybody  got some advise on removing the arbors?....Haven't had to do that before.

Depends if you want to save the old arbor or not?

What I usually do is to clamp the old arbor in the bench vise (hard) with the drill check pointing down towards the floor at about a 45 degree angle. If it is a MT arbor you can grab the tang. Then with a brass drift and a big hammer give the chuck a good whack at the shoulder right next to the arbor. Have some way to catch the chuck because it will come off the arbor heading to the floor at a great speed (ask me how I know this).

I have never had this method fail; with the Albrecht chuck you may want to remove the knurled collar so you don't damage it.

I used my bearing separator/splitter.

Here's a good link on Albrecht Chuck rebuilding.  It has a fixture for removing arbors-

Put a drop of oil on each face of the wedges so they will slide against each other, the chuck and the arbor easier.   After sliding the wedges in place, I like to apply pressure with a vice to get the arbor to separate from the chuck, but you can drive them together with a hammer on an anvil of some kind.  Does not take a very big hammer.

For those who don't know what a bearing splitter is, this is what I used to separate my chuck.  Granted it's a specialized tool that not everyone owns, but if you have access to one, it makes removal a snap.  You can probably rent one from an auto parts store.

Thanks Bob!

The wedges were $7....so pretty cheap.....and I 'll have them

Though a bearing pulley is desirable too.

OK!

Success!.....I got it off, and the new one in!

But not the Albrecht way!......but the Jacobs way!

I first tried clamping the straight shank in the smooth jaws of the Mill vise, and applied the wedges....first I clamped it gently.......then not so gently....then not gently at all!.....then down right hard!......it just slipped right out.

OK   Bench vise with serrated jaws.......same result!....it was just tearing up the shank of the arbor....so the hell with it I say.  We'll do it the published Jacobs method

I set the shank up on the mill and cross drilled a 1/4 hole through the shank near the taper.   I then put some washers in and put a hardened dowel pin in the hole to push against.  Then I put the wedges in and closed them with the mill vise.....slowly.....just as I started getting nervous...BANG....out it came.

Now I have the new chuck installed and I'm a happy camper!

Thanks for the help!

I had the exact same dilemma of stuck Albrecht arbors, but lacked the skill you have, so I sent the chuck to Albrecht in New York and they popped them out, overhauled the chucks, and sent them back like new. I think it cost about $25.00.

Well...I don't know if I'd call it skill...if you can drill a hole with a drill press...it'll work.

the shank is soft as turkey dooooo.

Experience is a great teacher heh?

What did Dave learn from this most excellent adventure?
Albrecht will do it for you cheap!

If you don't want the old arbor...the pin and push method works great!  ....and

Well....Baring sending off to someone, the next time I would do the following ( straight shank arbor only) ...if I was so inclined to save the arbor, I would make up a steel bushing about 1.25" OD but with an ID equal to the reduced center shank of the arbor and about the same length.    I would drill and tap it for (2) 1/4-20 screws and then split it.    Next I would attach the bushing and tighten the screws which will give me a collar to push against without damaging the ground shank surfaces.    Then....Id push it off using the wedges and appropriate spacer washers  in the mill vise....no drama

With a taper shank arbor,  with a tang, I would cross drill the tang for a pin and push against that

For a taper shank with a draw bar....that one is easy.

For a taper shank without a tang, if it's soft, I would drill and tap it for the standard draw bar thread and use that to push against.

For a hard taper shank without a draw bar or tang.....Call Albrecht!

But considering I've only ever HAD to do this ONCE in 20 plus years...I'll just file that one away in the notebook for future reference. 8)

And....if you can get the used Albrecht on CL with the right arbor for $25 more than without the right arbor...go for it!

Nice pictures, Dave.
I'm not so smart. What I really wanted from them, was to put the new arbors on true, but they just sent them back in  the box loose. I put one of them on my Chinese little drill press, now it's "sensitive". (like me).
