Dave, just an idea that may be handy one day. For the burner wick, substitute a bundle of iron/ steel wire, about 24,26 swg is about what I use, you'll never need to replace the wick, unless for some reason it rusts away.  My next one I'm going to try stainless  steel wire.
I discovered this form of wick in vol 1 Model Engineer and Amateur Electrician  1898.
Just make the wire full depth of the tank, plus the 1/4" or so of the protruding wick.  Ian S C

Bob, Dave, Don.

Thanks Fellas!

Hugh.

You should see my showtime, blue tartan!  ;)

Ian.

Thanks for the tip!

I've just been trying pipe cleaners. With some success.
But, I really prefer using stove rope. Several diameters available, at £1 per metre. And, it lasts "for ever".  ^-^

Well done David

Another orphan sorted - shouldn't be long then before we see the next  :stickpoke:  :)

Kind regards, Arnold
Building an engine takes Patience, Planning, Preparation and Machining.
Procrastination is nearly the same, but it precludes machining.
Thus, an engine will only be built once the procrastination stops and the machining begins!

Frazer.

I hadn't hidden it. Honest!

NEXT? NEXT? NEXT? NEXT? Why does everyone want to rush me?  :headscratch:

At the moment, I'm prepping 7 engines, for showing at "Steam Toy Lincs". On 7th September.

Then, I'll start on modding Mia's engine. Going to make it into a finger/ little fist, engine. For my 3yr old grandaughter.......

David D, I post the bit about wire wicks every so often, because there is on occasions some one asking what to use as a wick.  I'v used bundles of wire from 1/8" dia, to 3/8" dia, and one was 1/8" x 1/2".     Ian S C

Got a reply from Cornish Jack on the Model Engineer web site, at first he had the piston upside down, sorted that, got it running for a short time, then had a piston failure of some sort, is yet to make a new one.    Ian S C

Thanks Ian!

I wonder how many first time runners there are, compared to the abandoned failures........

Mine has just completed it's first show. Around 5hrs running time.

David D,  I would imagine that there is less than 50% of kits finished to run, and a lot of those probably very close to working, but given up on, maybe with the builder with a sore wrist from flicking it over.  If you don't get the clearances right it will sometimes go if you persist long enough turning it over, it happened with the first two or three of my motors, my second motor is twenty one this year, at first it struggled to do 200 rpm free, now it can hit 2000 rpm free, the longer you run them the better they go!     Ian S C
