Frazer.
I think they wish to remain anonymous. Frankly, I wouldn't blame them!  ::)

Bill.
Thanks for that! I only wish I had more time/ opportunity, to have more shop time.......  :'(

During a quick look at the crank assembly, I thought they had used a roll pin, for the crankpin!
Then I realised, the crack, (inclusion?), continued along the shaft too!  :o

With the lop sided big end eye. (See last pic). We need a full rebuild.......

Tried to use the original throws. But couldn't get them into alignment........

Made a pair of new ones.........

I don't do filing too successfully. Prefer to mill, where possible.

This is the set up for the r/t. M4 caphead and nuts, plus 4mm silver steel shaft.........

Grip on the nuts. Drive via the shaft........

Swap around for t'other end.........

Loctite plus pin, for 3 of the joints. And one, M2 grubscrew to allow dismantling........

Opened the 'orrible big end eye to 5mm dia.........

Made up a flanged bush, and matching washer.........

A spot or two of loctite, and it went together nicely, ready for reaming.........

Looks ok, I think.........

Wonder if I should have made balanced cranks? We'll see!

All ready now. For clean up, lick of paint, and rebuild, next week.......

Thanks for watching!

Looks ok, I think.........

I'll see that and raise you a "Wowza!"

A great improvement well done.

Looks ok, ok Hell. Still, great work mate . The "Destitute Engines" deserve love also. Seems you are doing a commendable job.

Tim. Whiskey, Frazer.

Thanks Fellas!

Well...... Not such a happy chappie, today.  ::)

I've got a big (ish) day tomorrow. So, I assembled the finished engine. Hoping to have a new toy.......  :)

Put a temporary light under.......

And NOWT happened!

After 20 mins, the whole engine was hot.
No attempt at running. Just a couple more rotations, in the correct direction. Compared to the wrong direction.

So, I let it cool, and fitted a temporary heat shield.........

That made no difference!

The assembly was "neat", rather than sloppy. Probably needs some slop.

So, I pushed out the double bearings. Replaced with single, to allow some crankshaft wriggle........

Faced all square. Polished the cylinder bore..........

No difference!  :cussing:

Detaching the power piston big end, proves the displacer section will spin freely........

So...... The problem is with the power piston.

I eased the piston o/d. No difference!

So...... I hit it with my little blowlamp!!! THAT, made it run, for a few seconds. Then it stopped.........  :headscratch:

Thinking calmly.......  >:(

Who in their right mind, makes a cylinder from a section of copper pipe. And fits an alloy piston?

Unless, someone knows differently?  :-\

Are you thinking that the alloy piston is expanding to a solid fit in the cylinder?

Hope the big day goes well, whatever it may be!

Hugh.

Frazer.
Thanks Marra!

Not too sure how I feel about today......  O:-)

Hugh.
I think the two metals are galling together. But in a very underpowered way.

I don't think extruded copper water pipe makes a suitable engine cylinder.

Thanks for the wishes. It's just another, but significant, birthday.....  ::)

Happy birthday David  I hope someone made you a nice birthday cake (I will have to make my own next weekend  :disappointed:)

I wonder would there be enough candles to run one of your engines  :LittleDevil: ?

Brass will make a passable cylinder, steel better, cast iron best.  A cast iron piston is the way to go.  The piston should slide through the open cylinder under its own weight, and when the cylinder is blocked, it should almost come to a stop, ie., move very slowly.   It's a good idea to put 3 or 4 shallow, narrow grooves in the skirt of the piston, these form a labyrinth seal, the piston may be run dry, or with a very light oil.  Copper and aluminium, no, friction too high.  Anodised, or Tercite(? Teflon coating) is OK for aluminium, but copper is not really a metal for this sort of use.   Ian S C

Hugh.
Thank you!

I've had a nice little day. Spent with my immediate family. Lunch in my favourite pub, and lots of good wishes from friends on my favourite forums.

I'm happy with that!  :)

Jo.
Mrs. Drillin baked me one of her fruitcakes. She's had over 40 years practice. I still love 'em, (and her).......

One birthday, the cake had 50, lit candles!!  :o I blew 'em out, with one breath.  ;D

But, that was 20 years ago....... Today, she didn't like to risk the fire hazard, or me having a heart attack.........

Hope you have a good day, and a nice cake too.  ;)

Don, Frazer.
Thank you very much, Fellas!

I've had a good day. Looking forward to resuming frustrations tomorrow........  :wallbang:

Ian.
Thanks for that! They are my thoughts too.......

But I'm coming around to the idea, this is another engine, where the displacer/ piston ratio is too small.
Both at 16mm dia. With 22mm x 12mm strokes.

Seems we might need a smaller diameter power piston!  ::)
