My refuge
« on: July 01, 2013, 10:31:15 AM »
My workshop - which can best be described as 'bijou'. Wish I had more room for bigger/more tooling but we have to make do with what we have. This is a small garage with a lot of stuff packed into it so it has to be reasonably well organised or I would never find anything! Main tools are an A2S mill, a Myford S7B, and an old mill/drill (hopefully soon to be replaced with a CNC mill). There is also a bandsaw & linisher attached to my main workbench at the other end.

You seem to be addicted to chucks. If I counted right, you have 7 of them.  :o
We can help you, to get rid of them. ;)

Well organized it is Chris!!!  One of the advantages of that though is most everything is within arm's reach :)  It has a nice homey feel to it too.

Well it's 8 if you include the small 4" 4-jaw which is out of sight :) Two new ones I bought recently were a 5" TOS 6-jaw, and a 5" Bison Griptru - both very accurate chucks and I can recommend them if you're looking for a new one.

I checked the run-out on the 6-jaw after mounting the backplate and it is effectively zero at the jaws and not much more at 4" out. It was a bit lame checking at 4" I guess because I could have 'corrected' any run-out with judicious tapping with a hammer, but as it happens I just shoved that test piece in the jaws without doing that. There is another video where I checked a piece of 40mm silver steel at 12" from the jaws where there was even less run out but again - it's pretty meaningless (and no-one would machine an unsupported length like that anyway). Of more interest is the fact the run-put at the jaws is consistent across a range of diameters, but then the chuck is brand new so to be expected (in a quality item).

Very well organized shop Chris. I wish I was as organized as you are. I am always looking where I laid my tools. That six jaw chuck I have been looking at a bison, very expensive chuck.

Nice equipment and layout Chris.  Nice built-ins and shelving, you do well at woodworking also.  Thanks for sharing.

Chri, that's my kinda OCD. Life is just too short to work with crappy tools. I bet you never lay a tool " just down on the bench", I bet it's always put right back in it's place. Here's to ya mate. If I could buy ya a beer, I would

Welcome aboard.

Your shop reminds me of the metalworking version of the famous Studley tool chest...

I don't know why Norm is so interested in the tool chest, I don't think I've ever seen him use anything that isn't plugged in to 110V.

I still like the shows though!
