Well....... I managed a workshop hour, this afternoon.

Pity it wasn't more productive.........

I was trying to emulate the original piston, only longer........

Guess I'll have to make a clevis, down inside the skirt. Held in with an M3 screw from 'tother end.

This stirring stick graphite is a lot coarser than I imagined it would be!

Hi David, a clevis maybe the way to go.That graphite definitely looks very coarse compared to the stuff Ive used.
Still banging my head against the wall this end so know the feeling
Never mind tomorrows another day
best wishes

A few tomorrows along, Frazer....... I had another go.

Thanks for the idea Nick.

I made another one........

It reminded me of compressed, dried leafmold.......

Couldn't polish it to round. It went all shapes, like a piece of grainy softwood.

And, the engine would only run, when persuaded with a small blowlamp.   :wallbang:

Think I'll make a brass piston, if I can get the time, tomorrow.   :)

Dave

Does look somewhat scratty, doesn't it. ?? :(

I've been fooling about with the graphite rod from a D-cell today, very fine grained that is ... hardish but machineable.

Hmmmmmm..... sure you haven't got an overcooked Hobnob ???

Dave

With regard to graphite, it's my understanding it's used in electro-discharge-machining. Don't know if this helps or not:

Good going David - you'll have the orphan sorted soon enough

Can't recommend graphite sources from my nook - I'm still looking for the same  :( , but you're right, that bit you have there seems a bit on the rough side...

Kind regards, Arnold
Building an engine takes Patience, Planning, Preparation and Machining.
Procrastination is nearly the same, but it precludes machining.
Thus, an engine will only be built once the procrastination stops and the machining begins!

Hi David , sorry to see a no progress day. That graphite looks really poor stuff never seen any thing that rough. On Low Temp sterling I mix fine graphite dust with Araldite and cast them but it don't like high temps
What size is the stuff you need I may have a bit . I think EDM forms are made from carbon not graphite not sure
Oh well as they say tomorrows another day :naughty:
Good luck
best wishes

There is a supplier of Graphite not 10 miles from Mr. Stilldrillin ....

Although I have no idea if the grades they have are suitable.

http://www.olmec.co.uk/

You can download the price list from the site.

But, as Mr. Steptoe Jr. [ almost ] said, ' You 'as to'ave ample akkers'

Woe, woe and thrice woe. ( could well be more that that actually   :'(  )

Although they seem to be a good few % cheaper than Noggin End, just lengths like 1100mm available ...

Thanks for your comments Chaps!

Dave. I think a recycled hobnob would have done the job much better.
I've already spotted the "nearby" supplier...... Think I'll wait for next year's pension increase!

Tim, Simon. I'm on the wrong side of the pond, to use those suppliers. Prices look ok, though!

Arnold, Frazer. Today is another day, as we say..........  I made a brass piston. It looks much better than the compost one!

It even runs much better.........

All parts are just bodged together....... It wasn't really happy, but I left it running for some 10mins or so.

Stopped it. And realised, the clonk was the piston hitting the bottom of the cylinder!
1mm removed, tomorrow, should make all the difference.

Ready for finish build, now......  :)

Happy little Drillin!
