Thanks for your kind words and interest, Chaps.

Stuart. From yesterday, we're up and running in, again.

Zee. The lathe started off as a Chester Conquest 7 x 12, around 8 years ago. It's now had a few adventures, additions and subtractions, along the way!

Frazer. Some graphite is on it's way. To join the K&S brass tube, and the 30mm cast iron. Several options available now!

Dean. That motor did eventually arrive......... Smashed! ...... Build story on Modder, eventually.

For the moment, the distractions continue........ Mrs. Drillin an me spent a lot of last night sitting alongside a trolley in A&E, again......

Thanks for your much appreciated concern Stuart!

But, I don't want to make much of it......
I only used that bit of info, to show the many and varied directions I'm supposed to be going in, all at the same time!

I managed to slip into the shop for 10mins this morning, and fitted the 5" chuck, with the flywheel casting.
Just a quick facing cut at around 500rpm.........

That will do for now! Just like a proper, grown up lathe.......

Thanks for all your kind comments, hint n tips etc. Over the past, too long.......

I've had a couple of gentle adventures, which you might like to see.......

The story of the lathe rebuild.....   http://madmodder.net/index.php/topic,7560.0.html

And, I had the time to post some gonna do's, I've done...... Also, complete some more...   http://madmodder.net/index.php/topic,7643.0.html

But! the big news is....... I've got Maiwald things underway again!  :whoohoo:

Assembled together what I could find........

Cast iron. Graphite. Brass tube. Also, 2 packs of M2 grubscrews...... Dunno what they are for!  :-\

And set up, to drill for cylinder sleeve......

Then...... The phone rang!

No time to get back to it, until next week. But....... We're progressing, at last!

I drilled out the cylinder with 7/16" drill, held in a 12mm R8 collet. Didn't think R8 collets would compress willingly, that far.....

The 7/16" K&S tube needed it's o/d reducing by a couple of thou. So, I turned a mandrel......

Leaving the o/d a little rough, for grip, stuck it in place using my favourite sleeve retainer.......

Will drill through to the displacer chamber tomorrow, when it's cured.

Question time now. Re-graphite pistons.......

I've never turned a piston, without some oil grooves.

Do I still groove a graphite one. Or, leave it plain?

Hi David, All the ones Ive made are just plain no grooves. Brown paper bag or card is good to polish them to size

Art shops ??? What sort of Art shops ??

The 'Slap-Dab' aisle at B&Q or something more exotic ??

I suspect they do charcoal sticks etc. but why Graphite ??
Where should I be looking?

The only thing I know it's used for is melting gold/silver.

EDIT looked on Amazon ... could only find this

Dave, Frazer.
Not for lubrication purposes! I wondered if there might be some pressure sealing advantage, to have grooves.......

Here's the big bar. For a future project, mebbe.   http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Graphite-Bar-/200808907492

And, here's the long thin un.   http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360482547877?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Thanks for the polishing tip, Frazer!

Hi Dave, don't know if grooves would be an advantage or not.
Thanks for the links they will be handy.Oh and I forgot to say but you probably already know, try and rig a vac cleaner up as its filthy stuff and the dust gets everywhere.
Nice to see you making headway again I seem to be going backwards at the moment but it happens :fos:
kind regards
frazer
