Collet extractor for a Mini Lathe
« on: June 12, 2013, 11:04:19 AM »
I find the MT3 collets for my lathe very useful (minimum overhang, maximum rigidity) but didn't like having to knock them out with a mallet.

After much thought I came up with a plan for a combined clamp rod/extractor to fit on the end of the spindle. It required replacing one of of the nuts on the spindle end which meant I had to cut my first ever internal thread (M27x1.5).

I first cut an external thread on a piece of bar using one of the nuts from the lathe as a gauge and then used this as a gauge for the internal thread. Luckily all the tolerances went in my favour and the finished nut fitted the spindle.

The rest of the assembly can be seen from the pictures.

So far it has worked well. The collets slide out with moderate spanner pressure.

Best regards

Roger

Here is the sketch/drawing if anyone is interested. You may need to make adjustments to fit your particular version.
