If you are interested in using various kinds of nails as raw materials, I compiled the enclosed tables to give dimensions for some useful commonly available nails. I only listed data on smooth shank nails figuring they would be most useful.

Don't forget the really big ones.  This 3/8" x 10".  About $1.30 ea.  You can get a finished 3.5" diameter rod out of it, or 1/4" square, or 1/8" x .350" flat bar out of it with a little work.
