Funny story,

I grew up on the edge of a wildlife preserve of fairly large size.   I "lived" in those woods as a kid.   One day a friend and were walking down the trail when we quite accidently...walked right up on a small skunk.,,,,our eyes met.

I took a step back....the skunk took a step back...then I ran!....then the skunk ran!...... we got some distance...nothing bad happened..

But we were thinking about it!

So, are you trying to tell us that the skunk could smell two unwashed little boys from a few yards?

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc7pB6VvJT8" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc7pB6VvJT8</a>

And consistent with my comments....here's what happens with a skunk and a dog....you'll see the skunk gave AMPLE warning.

Poor Sizzy, talk about 'out damned spot'! So do skunks only have so much, err, perfume, perhaps enough for a single spray, or can they deliver multiple times in an encounter.

Good vid Dave, lots more out there as well.

The active ingredients include sulphurous mercaptans.  It's not by accident that similar chemicals are used in natural gas to alert you to leaks.  Black bears weighing 300 lbs or so will go out of their way to avoid a 3 lb skunk.

Don't ever hit one with your car.  In fact, don't drive over one that's been hit by someone else's car.  DAMHIKT.

And don't ever let them let loose right outside your bedroom window in the Summertime. The close proximity brings the experience down to a whole new level. Around twice a year I go thru this.

Oh, I dunno..........slipped behind tree in my mates paddock one day for a quick pee and did not look down.

My sigh of relief only made a partial escape when it was forcibly removed by my breakfast...........I was peeing on a dead sheep which had been there for some time. That was 1960 and I still have vivid recollections of the pong, the maggots and the remains of sheep and brekky.

:lolb: Always suspected you seafaring men had weak stomachs! Worst stench I ever encountered was a very, very dead whale  in one of the tidal creeks up in the Kempsey area - 40+ years later the memory lingers on.
The older I get, the better I was.

Tel,

I don't know why but dead fish or ocean going mammals don't seem to bother me but any dead land animal and I'm a goner, takes me half a day to work up the courage and another half to clean a chook.  :'(

Best Regards
Bob

Irish Setters are pretty dogs but not known for smarts.  My daughter used to have one that would not leave skunks alone.  We found that tomato juice helped cut the initial odor followed by several soapy scrubs followed by several days of banishment from the house were necessary.

The same dog also never learned the porcupine lesson either.  Those episodes needed a trip to the vet and sedation to remove the quills from her nose.

Pretty dog but dumb.
