Rudy Kouhoupt Stirling Tractor
« on: April 30, 2013, 10:30:56 PM »
I'm starting a build of Mr Kouhoupts Stirling Tractor and wondering is there any known errors on the drawings .Iv never come across a build thread for one
I  had a bit of luck at that emporium of pain B&Q they have the right size material in stock for the chassis  so a start can be made.
Many thanks
frazer

Frazer, i have not built this engine so i can't comment from personal experience, but Rudy's plans have been printed and reprinted enough now that I have to believe they are welk vetted and should be error free.

I wouldn't go so far as to say there isn't any errors in his plans. When I built the Marine Steam engine there were errors that had never been corrected. I gather you are using the plans from the Shop Wisdom series? If you do find errors they will not be drastic. I was able to overcome the errors in my engine. So good luck Frazer and I will tag along for the ride.

Hi, Dave,Bill and Don many thanks.
A build log what with pictures and every thing ??? I will try my best but I'm not a machinist so if you see anything wrong please point it out.It will be a slow build as she is been fitted in with Victoria and a couple of boiler builds plus what ever else this scatter brain gets side tracked with and then there's that evil work.
I have made a good start today not many pics though and at the moment I'm cursing photobucket :censored: :censored:
Oh and yes the tractor is in Mr Kouhoupts Shop Wisdom Vol 3.
cheers and best wishes

Hi, just a little update.
The chassis rails and spacer were cut to size and I used M3 bolts .How does the American thread system work I have a conversion chart but what is say a 2-56 I think its about 8BA but what do the numbers actually do

Not very exciting. Then onto the front frame this was done simply by setting the X and Y stops on the mill

I have not drilled all the holes in the chassis as I dont know if I am making the standard gears and Im thinking about using ball bearings depending on what I can find in the swag box

Time for a tidy up and a little more to do on Victoria

cheers

I will be following along also.  That chassis looks like 16" long or there about.  Do you a a picture of the finished model?  I tried to search on the internet for a photo but could only find links to the steam tractor and not the sterling tractor.  Are they the same thing?

IIRC 2-56 is the thread used on D-connecters, not sure though

I don't think there's any significance in the numbers, just a designation like 2BA etc.

Unlike most of the squirrely notations, there is a significance.  The OD is given by:

OD = 0.060 + 0.013 * N

where N is the screw number.  Thus a 2-56 has an OD of 0.060 + 0.026 = 0.086".  The "56" is, of course, the pitch in threads/inch.

Incidentally, that BA number has a significance too.  From my notes...

Full series runs from 0 to 22.
Thread angle = 47.5 deg.
Crest and root radii = 0.18p (p=pitch)
Pitches are calculated as p(mm) = 0.9^n (n=number of thread in BA series)
Diameters are calculated as D(mm) = 6p^1.2

Frazer, this will be very interesting. The boat is gorgeous. Is Victoria a kit? (Although I'm sure you could make one from scratch).

Thanks Marv, it's very useful to know that, UN is common here. In fact, it seems that we have far too many thread systems in common use here.

Hugh.

As long as I'm explaining things, allow me to address one of my pet peeves...

It's StIrling, like the city in Scotland, not StErling as in silver.  The cleric's name was Robert Stirling.

I hope you don't mind Frazer.
