Sorry Marv I don't know why Iv done that to Mr Stirling I should have known better.
Thanks for the pics  Don
Hi Hugh, Victoria is scratch built from the plans available at MY Hobby Store she was designed by Basil Harley but and a big but for me at least she is a little small and I'm struggling to fit every thing into her and the cab detail has ended up out of scale I wish I had built Duncan a larger version from Kingston mouldings.I bought a hull moulding from my Hobby Store for her but it was so poor I sent it back and made the hull plank on frame
Thanks for the input gentlemen and please keep me right no offence will be taken
If possible can anyone tell me how to modify the header?? to the correct spelling.
cheers

Nice 1 Frazer, this will be an interesting project - don't often see anything being driven by our engines!

Thanks Allen just hope I do it credit,
The scrap box revealed a couple of nice 6mmx10mm ball bearing so the axle boxes have been made to take these I'm hoping it may reduce friction but to be honest have no idea

So after a bit of procrastination a start was made and the lump of scrap alloy chiseled down into a block.A pic of my mentor

I don't have any fancy kit so just use a fag paper and a bit of ground bar for edge finding but its lasted 30years or so
I set out the position of the bearing hole and simply center drilled it

Then it was time to bore the housing so onto the lathe and changed the chuck. We all use a chuck board

The job was set up by eye then clocked in using a spring loaded centre

Then bored to 10mm you are going to have to forgive me as I'm terrible for mixing and matching measuring systems to use what I have or that should be scrounged

The parts were parted of I have bored to full depth and press fitted the seat in I could have used a D bit or simply bored to the bearing depth but this was the easiest way for me
I simply measured the bearing block then machined the spacer plus 1thou just so the wheels wont rub on the block

So at least I now have a chassis with the rear axle bearings

Then onto the front stub axles I have decided to use some bearings from the swag box for the front wheels and fit threaded king pins so a little mod to the stub axles to allow for a thread but at the moment I cannot think of a nicer shape for them

Well that's about it from me .Works getting the way of play time at the moment
Thanks again for the interest shown in this little build
Cheers for the tea Dave
best wishes

Hi Frazer, looks like you are off to a good start. I want to build this one one day, so I am very interested in you outcome.
By the way is that one of G.H.T.'s small boring bar you were using? I have been looking at them in his book and thinking of making them. Does it work OK?

Hi Don, The boring bars are fantastic Iv used them for about 15 years .They could do with remaking now but they are well worth the time I also made the large one in the book . All I can say is I'm chuffed to bits with them and been a tight wads they cost soooo little

I'm watching with interest.

As to your edge finding technique, I have purchased and tried various kinds of fancy 'kit', and yours is the one I've happily settled on.
I have both a 1/2" and 3/8" ground rod, as those are the sizes of collet I'm generally using in the mill.

When I'm trying to be super-accurate, I rotate the spindle 180 degrees, approach again, and split the difference to eliminate any possible runout
(A fancy DRO does somewhat simplify that refinement to the technique).

Following along Frazer!   Fag paper works great with straight edges too to check flatness!

Keep it coming!

Looking good Frazer, I think I'm beginning to like this way too much .. I was just using fag paper today. Well us rednecks call 'em rolling papers. My Pops came in the shop and saw them laying there and said; " Aw Hell, not again". I was a good kid in the 70's, not a perfect one >:D :LittleDevil:
