Yeah, and I've done my 50 years on the splitting axe! The splitter is the best thing I ever did - with a usage of around 22ton per annum here it saves a lot of time and backaches. Mine is heavily modified - decent drawbar with towing hitch and jockey wheel, trailer axle and a decent set of wheels under it, splitting head beefed right up ..... At some point I will put a drop in light bar on it and get it road legal.
The older I get, the better I was.

Sounds better than the one I used Tel....It was heavily modified, but by a Master Mechanic...(my dad)....No safeties....a undersized engine...( it was free)

Cheap Yankee he was....still better than a maul or a sledge and wedges though!

Tel,

Do you have a drawing for such a beasty  :naughty:? The ones available in the UK are little wimps, hence  I find it faster to do it by hand.

Strangely enough, I thought Zee would pipe up.

We're mostly blue gum here Tel, pretty good, but you'd possibly get the boxes, stringy's and iron barks, a bit hotter I'd say. 22t, how many fireplaces?

That's a good burn...5-7 cord of wood I suspect....depending if it's hardwood or not...might be less

Yep, mostly yellow box, blakey's red gum and some red stringy to temper it down a bit. Kitchen stove goes all year round at 1t/month, which also gives us our hot water. An open fire, wood heater and occasionally the pot-belly in the workshop eat the other 10 t.

It's pretty heavy stuff Dave - Yellow Box is around 1100kg/cubic metre

Mine's from Kinchrome - they were a batch that were downgraded from 20t to 8t due to the cutting head - been re-graded back to 20t (and then some) - bought it cheap, spent as much again on it and ended up with a good machine. 6hp petrol engine & 20t double acting ram with two-way cutting.

Yow! I see they list at $2800 - I paid $900!

Mostly White and Red Oak and lots of Maple....there used to be a healthy supply of Elm till dutch elm disease got them ALL...though that is miserable to split and can only be done after a years seasoning.....even then, you need an axe and the splitter.

Occasionally some hickory...but that's very rare.

I have a fireplace, ( piss poor design...I think I burn more fuel with the fireplace lit!)   but since the kids were born...haven't really used it......guess I got the wood splitting thing out of my system when I was a kid.
