i do my model work out in my garage and during the warmer months i have the garage door open while i am working.
i bet once a week some one walking by asks if i could fix some thing for them. you know like sharpen a lawn mower blade
or like last night a young lady asked if i could fix her dogs leash. i never get money for these jobs but when it snows my drive way gets cleared, some times my grass gets cut and the lady with the dog brought me a plate of home made cookies.  :cartwheel:
it can be a bit of a pain but it all works out in the end and i have  neighbors that take care of me and put up with some of my shenanigans.

 :lolb:

I clear the snow from THEIR driveways.....and mow my own lawn..... ::)

Are your neighbors moving this way? 8)     The cookies sound great!

Seriously......They are good people...and obviously...at 49...I'm not going to make a Octigenarian mow my lawn....and the repairs are something I can do with the help of my 10 year old son...so I get a different set of benefits...and since I've been doing this for 20 years now... I have no one to blame but me on that count. ::)
The Wallaby will wait till evening....got to get back on that SB too.....and get the boat ready for the season...and clean the crap out of the back yard.....and...

This has been one of my distractions since last October; I agreed to help my brother with a 1935 Aermotor 8’ windmill that he had purchased. We retrieved the windmill from a small farm in eastern Oregon. This was a tired and worn old gal; I spent the winter making parts and fitting some of the new ones he purchased from the Windmill guys.

While I was working the gear box and related components he put the new foundation in and installed the well that it will pump from.
After hundreds of hours work today we stood it up and bolted it to the new foundation. After adding the 2 quarts of oil the brake was released and away she went. It is well behaved in the wind and furs nicely.

The first picture is in my shop and I’m on the left and my brother on the right. We had just completed the trial assembly of the wheel after installing the new sail that was missing when we got it and a bunch of the sheet metal clips that were damaged and or broken.

We have just a little more work to install the succor rod and pump and it should be able to pump water all summer.

Thanks Dave I told her the color of her face matches her lovely lavender bath robe.  I brought her some fresh cut lilac from the garden . All pretty shades of purples and blues.. :stir:
She is feeling much better today and getting around fine . I have already been told she is not ready to put her hands in the dish water. they were torn up as well not real bad but sore road rash. Fortunately no serious damage no broken bones or internal head trauma. they did ct scan of the head and face. Also an X ray of the left hand.

Dave,
It is really great that you are able to work with and help your brother, and especially to restore and use    something environmentally positive. Good on you!
Clearly, judging from the beer belly, you have also learned to celebrate these accomplishments, also. Often.
Congratulations. Hope to hear from you soon with more of those fantastic machines you make.

Hi Dave,

I've erected two similar Southern Cross windmills, one a relocation, and the other new. The relocated one was a rebuild too, the gearbox contained a lot of pea sized cast iron when we first got it. Such  satisfying projects.

Cheers, Hugh.

Yes that is the offending stick that caused the workshop ventalation and new shower facility last Thursday night.

It is down now so next job is to have the new workshop built  better still to find someone to help define the requirements for the workshop  :mischief:

Yeah, and I've done my 50 years on the splitting axe! The splitter is the best thing I ever did - with a usage of around 22ton per annum here it saves a lot of time and backaches. Mine is heavily modified - decent drawbar with towing hitch and jockey wheel, trailer axle and a decent set of wheels under it, splitting head beefed right up ..... At some point I will put a drop in light bar on it and get it road legal.

Sounds better than the one I used Tel....It was heavily modified, but by a Master Mechanic...(my dad)....No safeties....a undersized engine...( it was free)

Cheap Yankee he was....still better than a maul or a sledge and wedges though!

We're mostly blue gum here Tel, pretty good, but you'd possibly get the boxes, stringy's and iron barks, a bit hotter I'd say. 22t, how many fireplaces?

Yep, mostly yellow box, blakey's red gum and some red stringy to temper it down a bit. Kitchen stove goes all year round at 1t/month, which also gives us our hot water. An open fire, wood heater and occasionally the pot-belly in the workshop eat the other 10 t.

It's pretty heavy stuff Dave - Yellow Box is around 1100kg/cubic metre

Mine's from Kinchrome - they were a batch that were downgraded from 20t to 8t due to the cutting head - been re-graded back to 20t (and then some) - bought it cheap, spent as much again on it and ended up with a good machine. 6hp petrol engine & 20t double acting ram with two-way cutting.

Yow! I see they list at $2800 - I paid $900!

Mostly White and Red Oak and lots of Maple....there used to be a healthy supply of Elm till dutch elm disease got them ALL...though that is miserable to split and can only be done after a years seasoning.....even then, you need an axe and the splitter.

Occasionally some hickory...but that's very rare.

I have a fireplace, ( piss poor design...I think I burn more fuel with the fireplace lit!)   but since the kids were born...haven't really used it......guess I got the wood splitting thing out of my system when I was a kid.

I don't have a fire here , but one of the locals built his own splitter, it has a 380hp V8 diesel, he splits whole logs into fire wood size in one go, first length wise, then its turned 90*, and choped to length, mainly pine wood.    Ian S C

Now a big ol cone turned with some big ol 4 pitch threads turned on it and a big ol diesel pickemtruck. Put the cone on the hub and let wood spin around to deadhead on the ground. You could set in the cab, listen to country music, drank a beer, and let the wife jab the wood on the cone. :lolb: seriously google firewood processors, there is some amazing equipment out there. And as a little aside my grandpaw told me during the depression he built a wood trough to put under the wheel of his A Model. He jacked it up just far enough so when he fed walnuts in the trough it would crack the hulls, he would do so many and then clean the trough of the bounty. :old:

Y'alls Redneck,
Eric
