That looks right awesome. Can't wait to see more.
That's going to go well with the upright.

I have got one of those discs about 20" dia.  Just think of the engine turning you could do on that. :whoohoo:

You could make a fist engine on that ( big finger engine ? )

Cheers Dek. :old:

That's the problem when trying to engine turn a disk Ralph, every step out requires an angle change, which means of course you get more on the outside than in the middle, unless you change the size as you step out.

Your method is about the only decent one for getting an effect that is any good. Any more, and the effect looks abysmal.

Nice one.

And if you want to see a professional at work, try this site. He was very forthcoming with information when I contacted him a few years back.

Go to the bottom of the page and be amazed at some of the work being done.

Right Dek, there you go.... Once the clock is finished I'm going to  :stickpoke: till you build it    Honestly, I know you can do it

John, Remember all the comments about the first time I tried this?

Less is more - you should have stopped after the first circle.... Etc. All I can say is lesson learned

I made 2 minor errors, But I'll live with them cause even though I know they are there it took me a couple of goes to find them  ;)

That site is brilliant.... How do you ET curves???  :o

Just wish he made instructional videos!

Right, off to see about this flywheel

:lolb:

I still think you're onto something   We could join forces and build a fist engine!  ;D  (might have to work in the project title though!?

All my plans for today were totally scuppered!  Got no workshop time at all

phone calls and being called into work didn't help my planned quest... Maybe get some time tomorrow evening?

Thanks guys,

Glad you like it... Pretty happy with the current progress.

I'll get some more time in the workshop this week most likely.... Got all the fiddly bits to make. M2 threads etc (There should be a smiley with a magnifying glass  :)  )
I've been really busy with the car club over the last few days..... Santa Pod  :whoohoo:

What's "tapatalk"?  :headscratch:

Evening folks,

I've been able to get a few hours together and pretty much finish this project... I know, in less than a year! (Some people will know I have a few unfinished projects   :facepalm2: )

So, I left this waiting for a flywheel, a base and some little fixings.

Here are a few pic's of what I came up with....

First cut a 3"x1.5"  ali round into two... By hand!  :censored: Wouldn't clamp in my chop saw.  Finished them both off then started work on the 3/4" thick piece.

Now, the idea was to use the mill and rotary table to remove the material from the centre of the flywheel before cutting spokes into it... Problem with that was.... I liked the pattern the machining left behind :)  (Doubt John/Bogs will not be happy with me sidestepping the spokes once again!?  :slap: )

I had to make quite a few little arbours and work holding bits for this as there were a lot of fiddly bits to make...

The Base is in 3 parts. The stainless ET platform and collar for the upright you have seen already. But it needed a thicker part underneath the stainless for the upright to screw into... Wood seemed a good option for this.

I only had one piece of wood big enough for the job. A bit soft but workable (dunno what it is?)

Cut into a rough shape and then a centre hole drilled and mounted on the RT on the mill... and hacked into a shape to work with.

Taking shape... The little hub in the centre was removed after all the shaping and sanding was complete... carefully by hand with a razor sharp chisel.

I then helicoiled the centre hole to accept a M10x1.5 thread.

Mounted it on the lathe and sanded it down, scorched it a little with a blow torch and then waxed it.... Placed the other parts on and... One completed base.

Then add the assembled "engine"

I had a play with some artsi fartsi shots too...

Using 2 GID blobs charged up to do the light painting (10 second delay in the pitch black except for the GID bits)

Then I started waving around the laser I used to charge the GID bits up!  8)

Anyway.... I suppose I'd best show this too "And Action!"  :Director:

You click on the pic and it plays in a new window... Don't know if Photobucket can have a player like youtube?

Well, time for bed... work in 5 hours  :disappointed:

 :cartwheel: Lovely job Ralph !

;D Love the artsy photos as well.

Kind regards, Arnold
Building an engine takes Patience, Planning, Preparation and Machining.
Procrastination is nearly the same, but it precludes machining.
Thus, an engine will only be built once the procrastination stops and the machining begins!

Absolutely beautiful Ralph. You outdid yourself on that base but the whole think is just a real showpiece.  Thanks for sharing this one with us!!!
