A skeleton 3 cylinder radial compressed air engine
« on: May 18, 2013, 06:07:07 PM »
Hi!

Was that title descriptive enough?  ;)

This is my last finished project. I wanted something easy to go in between my everlasting project.
I once have built a similar engine, but that one was all machined. Thinking about making a new edition, I decided to use castings.

Here are some pictures:

Are there any? I'll post before I continue …

OK, the forum-software is a bit odd, but I'll get used to it.

This engine runs with very low pressure. Well below 0.2 bar. It runs if you blow into the tube. Green as can be! I tried it with 2 bar, then one cylinder blew off.  :naughty:  Forgot to tighten one screw.

I never intended to build an engine to be used in an aeroplane, it is just for display and playing with it from time to time.

Here are some pictures of the various parts. Overall, 29 parts (including 3 screws and one c-clip):

I'll post the drawings later.
If you have questions, you have to ask them.

Here are two videos.
One of the engine:

And one machining the case:

I like to hand-code the G-code for stuff like that. Keeps your brain exercised.

PS: Why does the editor insert formattings (size) I never asked for? I keep clicking the "remove formatting" button.

The plans are here: radial 3 cylinder compressed air engine

I sent a casting to one MEM-ber just the day before yesterday. I'd like to wait how all comes out (customs etc., as I'm from Germany).

That's a nice engine! Very few parts indeed. I guess it would be far better a casting. You could be (with a lathe and a mill) turned and milled less than 10% of the spidery "skeleton", and exchanged a humongous bin of swarf, with something abt. 70mm dia. and a 50 mm length block.
