Another newbie from Sweden
« on: March 01, 2013, 09:51:18 PM »
I thought it was time to introduce myself. Have been lurking for a while admiring all the different engines you are making. Really inspiring!

I am still very much in the "working life" so time for model engineering can be hard to find at times. I have built up a small shop at the end of our garage and that alone caused a lot of work to just make a lot of the items needed for the machines.

Now that I am getting familiar with the machines it is time to make som models as well. I started out with a Trojan but it has come to a halt as I felt I did not have the precision I wanted. Instead I found some sketches of a machine called RiverQueen on the Internet. It is a small, interesting and SIMPLE machine to make as a real first one. Having studied the drawings I thought it could do with a slight alteration  :embarassed: I did not like the angled connecting rod so I made a table to put the cylinder on instead of just putting the columns on the cylinder.

So far it looks like this:

The table is not secured to the base yet, that is why it is slightly skewed. It is all made from bits from the bits box, mostly brass but an Alu top and steel bearing blocks. It is test assembled to find what needs to be fixed for a perfect fit.

Apart from this my main hobby is model railroading and some gardening as well. I have made a small home page which I am currently trying to translate into English but I still have a number of pages to do. You can find the site here: http://www.daaseberga.se/index-en.html

 :hi: Peter,

Nice start .

Question: What machines are you using to make this on.

Thanks a lot for a warm welcome everyone!

Jo, my shop include a SIEG C3 lathe, a SIEG SX1L mini-mill, a smaller MJ-189 lathe a bench pillar drill and a standard offhand grinder. The main machine is the C3 nowadays and it is on the C3 I am doing most of the work for the little steam engine.

Welcome Peter!
Fun that its more people in Sweden doing this hobby.
River Queen was the first I did also but I never get it to run.
Hope you have better luck.

Thanks Ove,

Whether the River Queen will run or not remains to be seen. It took a while to understand the valve setup and that part will probably be the important part to get right next after getting a good fit in the cylinder.
