over the last few weeks I have been making parts for Stews Horizontal mill engine and re-learning all about hand filing....(I miss my mill

)...and have a pic of the parts to date. Still need to find some suitable metal for the flywheel and 1 part to finish ..the joiner for the valve rods.

Wow thats great work

you're the first I know to have taken the chalenge hope you found everything OK with the drawings, I like the shaped base for the cylinder.

I've just bought a load of material at the Manchester ME show to tackle this design it will be a few months before I start though, you'rs will be well finished by then looking forward to next progress report.

Nice 1 Pete, I'll be watching. How did the cylinder go as I have designed my mine engine cyl on the same concept - no offset turning and no angled drilling!

Stew I haven't found a problem in the drawing and all is going good. I shaped the base as I felt a block didn't do justice to the engine ..glad you don't mind

. Just trying to find some thing for the flywheel but will assemble it as far as I can. Steve my mill is down due to the switch breaking down. I have a replacement but can't afford the sparky to fix it yet. I got some help here but I couldn't get it to work and don't like stuff I can't see and can kill. Already got 1 tingle from it so called it a day... wussy but still breathing. Cylinder worked a treat NickG and didn't present any probs.

well things have been a bit slow here lately mainly due to all the hand filing required for the flywheel and then a puter crash

which is still on going as the pics etc are on the backup which win 7 now won't recognise

. I will take another set of pics so y'all

(Carl et al) can see where I am up to.

Pete, It sounds like you might not be using the files correctly, you shouldn't get achy

. Are you pressing too hard? Like hacksawing let the tool do the cutting don't put additional pressure.

Jo can't press too hard as I have serious arthritis problems. That's why its taking so long. The sparky was coming to fix the mill for over a week now ...must be busy

or something.

Just to update this thread a little. I just added the pics of making the flywheel with a couple bits missed. I started with a lump of steel I had laying around, marked it out then into the bandsaw to cut to size and width and knock off the corners, into the lathe and make it round. Then marked out the spokes, drilled, removed excess then filed ....and filed ...and filed

and ended up with a round thingy with spokes. Its now nearly ready for assembly once I get the base ready.

Good stuff, a true recycler at work

It might take a little more effort than buying quality bar stock to make things out of but it is that little extra of knowing you didn't have to pay for it

Jo I like to work with what I have when I can. This used to be a counter weight from the front of a machine which over time has reduced in size. I like to recycle. Once my furnace is up and running I will be able to recycle a heap of aluminium that I have

Looks good Pete. Nice to see spokes of a flywheel cut by hand - I've ways drilled holes in flywheels because I didn't have a rotary table, now I have one. I still haven't used it! Why didn't I just drill a few more holes then cut them out like you?!

Vince arm is fine but it took a while but enjoyed doing it darkside (hand tool) method but takes lots longer than the mill.
