This is my first engine.  It was made from a aluminum casting kit that I got form the GEARs show last year.  It is for the 2011 year (they were sold out of the 2012's).  It is my first engine build and I thoroughly enjoyed it! :)

The kit included the base, the cylinder, front and back cylinder covers, and the fly wheel.  The rest was bar stock & some socket head cap screws!

Oh yeah, and I ad-libbed a little by using a piece of plexiglass for the cover to the steam chest.  I liked being able to see the valve in side! :)

I've attached a youtube video of it here and several photos below.

Thanks!
Kim

Wow! For a first engine that is amazing.

I'm still trying to reach that quality after four engine builds.
I think I'll go slink off into corner.

Great work, Kim. Looks like an adjustable knuckle joint on the valve rod, something I've not seen before.

Hugh.

Thanks for the kind words Lee, Jon, Bill, Zee, Hugh, and Don.  There's a lot I plan to do different next time around, but that'll probably always be the case.  Thanks, I'm relatively pleased with the outcome regardless :)

Hugh.

Well, not sure if this was right or not.  It's my first attempt; I only had a set of drawings to go by, and a photo that I took of someone else's model at the show. No printed instructions.  So I made some of it up as I went along :)  I think my threading job was less than perfect and the treads fit too loose.  It would turn while running. That's why there are those big brass nuts on either side of the knuckle joint. The plans didn't show them, but I needed'em.

Thanks for taking a look!

Kim

Congratulations on a very successful first build, you must be very proud of your achievement.

I too like the plastic valve chest covers, but don't forget to replace with metal if you run on live steam!

Kind regards

Lovely job for a first engine Kim.

I hope my first is even 1/5 as good!
