Ah- yes, 1949- we had Rolls Royce Merlins and Griffons on RAF 31 ( Goldstar) Squadron.

Most of us- who are survivors-- are deaf.

Last summer (i.e. two years ago!) the BBMF Lancaster did a couple of  very low passes over our heads at Santa Pod...

There's something about 4 RR Merlins running together on the Lanc, that just sends a shiver down my spine - and I'm nowhere near old enough to have experienced them for real. The best thing is, add more Merlins, and the sound just keeps on getting better. I can imagine having a full squadron of Lancs flying overhead was a sound that would never leave you.
Cheers,
Ade

Sorry to say I'm not too big on loud noises...but I have a few favorite sounds...

Falling snow.
Wife leaving to go grocery shopping.
Wife returning from grocery shopping.
Sleeping kids...and pets.
Spreading good butter on a baguette.
Paycheck hitting the bank.
Head hitting pillow.
The gurgle from a freshly opened bottle of vodka.
Throat stretching burp when it's my own.
Slicing of cheese
and popping of wine cork.
Stationary grindstone.
Dreaming.
Raucous silence.

Many more such lovely sounds.
Carl (aka Zee) Will sometimes respond to 'hey' but never 'hey you'.
"To work. To work."

Dave you got that right (it's the ringtone on my phone) but to get the full effect you need to hear it live - unfortunately it's run so infrequently now that it rarely runs cleanly and properly - much like in period!  Nick Mason's book 'Into the red' includes a CD of sounds of the cars including the BRM - turned up load it makes my spine tingle.

For more on the V16 I recommend reading Tony Rudd's biography 'It was fun' or Doug Nye's BRM vol 1.

There is a vidio on RNZAF Proboards, of a flight in the resently rebuilt Mosquito flying over the Auckland area just a few weeks ago, its just as if you were in the cockpit with the full sound of those two Merlins.  Vidio 16 min long.  Ian S C
