Drunken Gears
« on: February 18, 2013, 01:15:47 AM »
I've seen these drunken gears at the tractor and model shows.  I finally got around to making some.  First I made a set with a hand crank, then I made another to go with an oscillator I made a couple of years ago.  I had to make up a "worm-wheel" drive, just like I saw here on MEM: thanks to KevinB for the inspiration :praise2:  I've attached a photo and (hopefully) an .mpg file to show the action.  The vid was made on the initial mock-up so the base is not correct, but here goes...

At sure is an eye catcher. I've also been witness to gears that are of "oddball" shapes as well, they only spin in one plane though. Your engine and display are very attractive and neatly presented.

That's really neat! A great little gear train you have built there.

Thanks for the kudos too!

I have wanted to try some of those "organic" gears.

Thank you Gentlemen for the nice words and encouragement.  It was fun to build, and lots of fun to play with.

It's really interesting to see what can be done with gears. Nice!

I've also been witness to gears that are of "oddball" shapes as well

I struggle to understand some of those. I've seen square gears, gears put together in the shape of a heart, etc. Really neat stuff.

Very nice indeed. I love watching odd ball gears mesh together. wish I had the skill to make them. One set I'd love to see running is the one operating this water pump (half way down the page)

how anyone can even design this 'car crash' of gears, let alone actually make it, totally baffles me.

Looks like they made it out of plastic and left it out in the hot sun too long.
