I had a little time in the shop today. I had to check the alignment of my lathe and while at it I decided to turn the worm spindle. I had run a test with a bar between centers and since it checked out good I mounted the worm spindle between centers and started to turn the front 1/2" part of the shaft  that fits into the front bearing block.

In this first photos I started turning the front bearing shaft diameter to .5"

Then I reversed the shaft to start turning the second bearing surface also to .5".

This time I finished turning all the diameters of the different areas of the shaft and started to thread the 7/16"x 26 portion of the shaft.

The last portion of the spindle this will secure the dividing plates and is threaded to 1/4" x 28.

This is the finished shaft all complete.

In the process of changing back to regular turning, when I shifted the gear box for threading to normal this is what happen. I don't guess anyone has a spare gear. My lathe is now down till I can make another gear. The bearing block will have to be turned on the lathe so I am at a standstill till I can improvise.

Till I can get my lathe back up I will be a while getting back to this and I have work also to take care of.

Don,

I didn't see the broken teeth!   OUCH!

What pitch?

Give me an OD and a tooth count, and we'll see what we can do.

Hi Don,
Nice work on the shaft. It looks like the gear with the stripped teeth is a type of fiber material? Would it help to make it out of something more substantial?

Hi George, yea I have some Aluminum bronze that I will probably make it out off. But looking at it I believe it was made out of fiber board for the purpose of shearing, just like it did.

Dave, thanks I will sort it out.

Looking good Don, too bad about the broken teeth. If you make some new gears then they're part of the build too, right? Good luck with them.

It looks like it is the forward tumbler gear that has sheared so if you swop it over with the reversing gear you can keep running until you can pick up another. They are readily available this side of the pond .

http://www.myford.co.uk/acatalog/Myford_Super_7_Headstock_Assembly.html  They are £18.23 including postage in the UK. Postage should be about £3.

Sorry to hear of your broken gear Don.  Can't be of much assistance to you in this case but hopefully you'll get the lathe running in a short time.
