I updated my hosts file on my Win7 machine and got it first try; what a painless switchover.

Thanks for all you do.

Nice job, I am glad it didn't give you headaches.  Is it my imagination or are some symbols like the British Pound now replaced with ? question marks?  Unicode issue?

Thanks for keeping us going

Thanks for a job well done, Ade!!   I didn't get a chance to even try coming here until just a short time ago, and everything had already updated, I didn't even have to mess with my hosts file.   :praise2:

Thanks for all the thanks! It actually wasn't that difficult in the end, we'd already done the hard bit (getting the forum to work on the new server), so on the day it was just a case of copy the attachments & database, and set a few path files up. And then set the other paths up that I forgot.... doh!

I've had one report of some missing posts, which I will look into today, other than that, it's all looking surprisingly good!

As someone said, is that actually allowed in IT today???

You can also now be assured that the entire hosting operation is in the hands of all of the administrators; the only thing I retain sole control of (and that will change when it's renewal time) is the hostname, and only because I didn't think to set up a new account when I registered it... However, when the 2 years are up, I will transfer the domain to the hosting account, and then MEM will truly cease to be a "single owner" operation.

I'd also like to thank everyone who has participated, without you, there'd be no MEM to move; but more than that, this has become such an amazing place in such a short time, I was genuinely nervous about moving it, just in case the upheaval was too much...

Finally, I'd like to thank the other Admins & Moderators, all of whom have helped massively, either with setting up the e-mails (which appear to work again, hurrah!) or testing, or both, etc. Without your unpaid labour, this place simply wouldn't be what it is now.

And on that cheery note, I'm off to put a 12 hour day in the office  :'(
Cheers,
Ade

I saw the other thread with the instructions for PC users, what abut Mac users ??

Its to late now

but FYI  open terminal

type in sudo pico /etc/hosts
enter your password note the cursor will not move press enter
add the required info
press ctrl X press Y then enter

you will have now altered your hosts file

you need sudo ( super user DO ) because its a root file and is hidden from mortals

Hi Ade,

I didn't even have to change my settings before accessing the  site.  I even forgot that you were moving servers until I read this thread again.  Well done and congrats on the success.

Best regards and thanks for all the effort put in by all involved.

Terry
