Milling a Tooth
« on: December 10, 2012, 11:53:53 PM »
Went to the dentist today to get a crown put on.  They took pictures of the area where it was to fit and then designed the crown on a computer and sent it to the back to be milled.  They asked me if I wanted to see it being milled so of course I said yes.  The mill was a small counter top affair.  The tooth was milled from a piece of ceramic. and was being shaped by two burrs going at once.  During the process a burr failed and they had to replace it. (They let me have the old one just for fun) I took some photos and a short video of the process. After the crown was fitted, they took it back and fired it before the final installation.  All in one visit.  You can see in the photo where the burr has a nice taper.

Looks very similar to the machine that made my crown. I only went in to have a large filling repaired and came out a couple of hours later with a new crown. Oh, and several hundred quid lighter in the wallet ...

It took two or three weeks to get the one I had done a few months ago.  The dentist has to have them
made in CO.  I don't see why there isn't some place in Abq. that could make them.  Unless there is some
skulduggery afoot.
