holding device
« on: December 08, 2012, 10:54:21 PM »
hi this is one of the most versatile tools that i have ever made it ant hard to mack all you need is a old file Handel and a drill chuck the chuck size ant important or if its threaded internally or externally Wat is impotent is that its in good order the one in the pics is internally the first thing to do is to mack a shaft for the chuck to fit on once you have mad that you will no Wat and haw deep to drill the hole in the file Handel mack the part That goes in to the Handel as ruff as possible so that Wat ever you use to bond the shaft to the Handel gets a good grip once bonded to the Handel you can drill and pin the two together right pics

Thanks for sharing that Bob.  Just right for those little jobs you can do by hand.

I like it Bob.

Think I need to make one for myself

You didn't spline the handle ferrule just for this job,  did you?

I'm curious about what it may have been in its previous life.

 Thanks for sharing

Great idea Bob!

I've adapted several chucks for tapping purposes. Never thought to make one with a handle!  :facepalm:

I'm fed up with grinding/ burning me fingers, while de burring little parts.  ::)

i have an old drill chuck that i was going to throw out cause it will not hold anything centered, but it would be perfect for this application.  :ThumbsUp:

thanks bob for a great idea.

For lazy types Proops Brothers do a version of this tool  http://www.proopsbrothers.com/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Drill_Chucks_47.html

Be warned whilst the handle is usable the chuck is poor though.

I made mine from a redundant hand drill, this provided the chuck and handle.

My own version of this tool, assembled;

And dissembled so the chuck can be used in lathe or mill;

Chuck was an ebay 'bargain' that I resisted for a few months then decided it deserved a good home since nobody else seemed to want it  :)

Two nuances to improve the utility of this tool...

If the chuck has a through hole, drill out the handle so the tool can accept long pieces of stock.

Just behind the chuck mount a free-wheeling finger grip.  Then, by grasping the finger grip and spinning the handle you can point workpieces on the bench grinder.
