The final table was of a collection of "as found" model engines. The owner had taken to purchasing old model boats at auctions and extracting the engines from them as he had found this was a cheaper mans of acquiring the engines than buying individual engines.

Terry Aspin engine:

A Kiwi

It is always a difficult choice as to what is better: clean up the engine or leave it with its original patina  :noidea:

Where people are no longer able to afford to get into model engineering many are taking to collecting model steam toys such as Mamod and Wilseco:

As rather empty trains went round the outside of the gala:

Traction engines were running around inside:

And a couple were available for sale:

There were two boating lakes, the first was for the kiddies

The second for the models:

Which were displayed in their own gazebos:

There was the usual display of locomotives and this one slightly different one:

I was left somewhat disappointed with it. Talking to one trader on the first day he took less than £100. He said that the Midlands show was asking him for £1200 for one of the little cubicle stands at the show, so there is no way he can justify attending.

Thanks for the photos Jo and good to catch up with you and the two Mikes at the show.

Yes you would certainly have to sell a lot to cover that stand cost plus fuel and accommodation.

Thanks for the excellent pictures - looks like a great selection, it’s a shame attendance was down.

At the beginning of this thread Dave outlined the finances of attending a show. The Guildford show is free to get in (lets not talk about the parking problems  :ShakeHead: Normally they have it sorted) but is lacking what it used to be. The Midlands show is later this year and for me is a 200 mile tiring drive, irrespective of displaying or not, you are then charged to get in. Over the years the number of traders have been reducing there and no doubt due to the cost of displaying models, the number of exhibits have also been reducing.  But Mike Coles is planning to exhibit at the Midlands show but he will not be running due to safety restrictions  :disappointed:

Thank you for posting a fine set of pictures  :)  :)   :wine1:

The collection of '0ld' engines was excellent. I guess most of them were made with just a lathe and a bench drill.
Best regards

Roger

Jo has given an excellent overview of the Guildford Show. Sadly the engines on display almost outnumbered the visitors.

Here are some of the engines on display in the MEM Gazebo.

I will start with Mike Cole's collection of running engines.

ABC Scorpion

Chennery V Twin

Laser RC engine converted to sparks and petrol

Gnome Mono    always a good runner

Anzani  was reluctant to run all of Saturday

Bentley BR1   never fails to run beautifully.

Here are a selection of Jo's varied engine display

Some of the Stuart family

And my two favourites

The Bolton and Watt

The Easton and Anderson.

Jo

The other Mike  AKA Vixen also brought along some of his engines, some complete and some still work in progress

Bristol Mercury MK VIII

More parts made for the Mercedes Benz W165 engines

Westbury Seal

Bristol Jupiter magneto test rig.

Hope you enjoy these as much as we did

Thanks, Jo, for featuring the excellent photo coverage of the show as it now manifests itself. Among the items exhibited are examples of what must be some of the finest model engineering being done anywhere in the world at the present time.  When one remembers the Guildford shows going way back, and the massive interest and quantity of visitors and trade support that was manifested, it does seem a bit hard to credit the change that has been wrought, but I hope that those who attended enjoyed themselves.  Dave

Thanks, so much Jo and Mike for your wonderful pictures.

As all have said, it is a pity that attendance is down, but I suspect Covid is making some people cautious of crowds.  But it makes it hard on the organisers to make the logistics and finances work out.

I hope at least that those who attended and made the effort to display their engines found it a satisfying day with more opportunity to catch up with each other.
