UPDATE2: My hotel-based internet connection just isn't strong enough to do all the up/downloading I need to do...
I'll revisit the move later in the week. Watch this space.
Ladies and Gentlemen of the forum,
As some of you have noticed, the forum has been quite glitchy of late, which I am aware has caused plenty of frustration and even withdrawl symptoms. For that, I apologise. The Admins are still investigating long-term solutions, which take time because we're all busy with existing families or obtaining new families, and various other "real life" intrusions. So, as an interim measure, to prevent anarchy and too much withdrawl.... we are going to move the forum to a new host on a temporary basis. At the moment, we're just testing the new home on a migrated copy of the forum, so I can get some idea of the problem(s) [if any] we will face.
Assuming all goes well & everything looks ship-shape, on SUNDAY 15th January, hopefully during the wee small hours (UK time)/late evening maybe early morning (US time) I will change this message to indicate the EXACT time the forum will close. Please don't be typing a message at that time, or you may lose it! The forum will go into maintenance mode, and I will do the migration. Based on today's experiment, I expect it to take up to 1 hour. [also... that Sunday date depends on many factors, including a 10 hour flight, and hotel internet... If this message is still here, unchanged, after Sunday, then carry on regardless, I'll try to give at least 24h notice of any changes].
When the new forum is running, it will be opened for posts, and the DNS records changed to point to it. I'll also set up a temporary additional URL which points to the new place, so if you find yourself landing here at the old place, just click on the link to be taken to the new one anyway. I can't alter the timeout of the DNS records, but it's set to 4 hours, so in theory the longest anyone will not be able to access the forum, is 4 hours.
For those who are comfortable with IT and fiddling with deep dark network settings, I'll also add a host record you can do to dodge the whole DNS issue entirely, for as long as is necessary.
My apologies for taking up a big chunk of the homepage with this announce, but I want as many people to see it as possible. The new location for the forum might be a little slower than it is now (no load balancing), but that should be more than made up for by the lack of glitches and other failures.
Any questions, please feel free to post in the "Suggestion Box and Forum Help" forum, where a thread is already in progress discussing the issues. Or use the Shoutbox.
Thanks for your time & patience; but most of all, thanks for making this THE best model engine forum on the planet - quite possibly the Universe We, the IT so-called engineers will attempt now to do half as good a job as you do with your lathes & mills & files & hammers. Respect to you all.
Ade. aka Admin
and the other Administrators who have no idea I'm posting this
PS: When you get sick of seeing this on the home page, click the little minus picture in the right hand side of the header bar, and this message will collapse out of the way.
